Hey Guys,

I bought this vehicle used with about 26,000 miles on it. I have done 2 oil changes, the second OCI was with about 2,500 miles on the oil. I did a early change b/c the first sample came back and didn't look great. Very high Iron. Not sure how long that oil was in the car, but I know it was a long time. The oil looked terrible. It was as black as any oil I've ever seen come out of a car.

Just curious to see what you think about the results so far and if you think I should do another early OCI on this oil.

I'm using AMSoil 5w40 Euro formula.

Thank you.

TNB on this oil starts fresh at 5.8. I think this is the lowest TBN oil that AMSoil produces. On the other cars I have used this oil on the wear metals are always below average. I use this oil on a 3.0 supercharged engine and at about 7,500 miles the TBN is in the 2 range...so it seems to drop then holds pretty strong.

TBN starts at 8.0. It's the 507.00/504.00 5w30s that have the lower starting TBN.

I could see TBN dropping as far as it did after 5K or 7.5K miles (factory interval is 10K miles under normal conditions). But in this application, something is odd with the amount of fuel used given over 1000 miles a month.

You are right...I looked at the wrong weight when I quoted that number...thanks for catching that.

So what gives??? Why do you think the TBN is dropping so much?? Should I try a different oil or do you think that since the first oil analysis came back so bad it might take another OCI to get the oil pan fully flushed out? AMSoil has always served me well in the past. Thank you for your help!

Yes...great advice...do you think a faulty cam follower could make the TBN drop faster???...could it leak gas into the oil supply?

No.

The FSI is just hard on oil.

Right, that is what it comes down too. I'd probably use an oil with higher levels of ZDP in this particular engine. That may make no differences at all if it's truly a manufacturing/design problem.

I wouldn't be panicking too soon, the Iron dropped almost 400%, just residual. I would stick with the amsoil at least 1 one more time and that should give you a better idea of the wear in that oil chewer of an engine. Syntec 5w40 has a better additive package, but you may not need it. Also an ester like RedLine may stay in grade better. Go with the Amsoil one more time, I have a feeling you will have normal wear #s.

Seeming as this is the first time Amsoil has been used in this engine and is cleaning up a LOT of leftover [censored] from the previous oil, i think the oil is going a pretty good job.

With a second fill, the TBN should stay a bit higher and the oil will be in much better conditions (as well as the engine) and suitable for extended OCIs
