That doesn't always save you. Where you pick up radically on reliability due to the limited complexity ..durability is always in question. You'll typically spend less in swapping it out in 150k-200k ..but that assumes you haven't done an intermediate clutch job along the way.
With manual transmissions it seems that driving habits make a much bigger difference in how long they last. They are easier to kill than an automatic but on the other hand, they can still be functional with the syncros worn out if the driver knows how to compensate for this.
Also clutches are totally driver dependent. My wife and I haven't had to touch a tranny or a clutch yet, in 32 combined years of driving and I don't really expect to as long as we have manual transmissions.
I also like the ability to bumpstart, compensate for engine problems like stalling, and the cars are cheaper with a manual.
I also wonder why many trucks have higher tow ratings with automatics than manuals? Is it just clutch wear they are worried about? or are autos actually tougher when it comes to transferring 100+ hp for hours at a time?
