Recently changed the oil in my 2008 Ridgeline (J35) with 200k miles on it. The OCI was 6500 miles on Supertech Advanced Full Synthetic 0w20 with a Supertech filter. There were several bits of metal in the drain pan and lots of gritty gunk and metal in the filter. Thoughts?

I have owned this vehicle for the last 55,000 miles and always changed the oil between 6500 and 7500 miles with Supertech 0w20 and either a Supertech filter or a Fram ToughGuard. Truck (yes I know its not a real truck, har har) has never skipped a beat and runs smoothly and quiet.

Downright *****! I’d put some HPL PCMO 5w30 in

I would back up the oil change interval to like 5K miles max and look for a more detergent based oil.

That's the worst lookin filter I've ever seen here.
I hope you sent an oil sample off to be analyzed?
Unfortunately not. I didn't expect this oil to be any different from the last 8 oil changes I've done on this vehicle so I didn't think to collect any.

Hard to say what's metal particles and what's light shining off of oil in the photos.

Are the metal particles magnetic? That will give some clue to the possible source.

The small gunky metal mush isn't magnetic but some of the larger pieces are.

Likely not oil or filter related. I did some searches, no one else has experienced that issue with any Super Tech oils.

Just to be able to fully rule out the oil caused the issue:

[1] If you did that oil change yourself (before the incident), do you remember if the oil poured "too thin" like water?

[2] Also, Super Tech oils have the paper/plastic coated anti-tamper material on the spout of the container.
Do you remember if that was in tact when you opened the container.

Another possibility is the previous owner(s) who owned the vehicle for about 145k miles before you bought it,
didn't change the oil frequently enough, and the engine was sludged up before you bought it.
A piece of that sludge may have eventually broke off and blocked an important oil passageway.

People here on BITOG have been using SuperTech oils for decades with no issues whatsoever.
Hard to believe the oil or filter had anything to do with the incident.
