2007 Ford Fusion Harsh shifts

I have a 2004 Mazda which specs ATF-MV. The new Mobil 1 ATF ("recommended for" everything and certified for nothing) SUCKED with harsh shifts.

Everything has been fine since I switched back to Mazda ATF-MV. I now have 120k miles on the car.

0-90k miles (M1 ATF certified for Mercon V)
90-100k miles (M1 ATF recommended for everything SUCKED)
100-120k miles (ATF-MV everything's now fine)

In case you didn't understand, Castrol makes "two" multi-vehicle ATFs. They make a "domestic" multi-vehicle ATF and an "import" multi-vehicle ATF. You need to check which one you were using because only the "import multi-vehicle ATF" is recommended for the FNR5 ATX. The domestic version is too thin.

You have a different transmission (probably the 4-speed).

You should be using Mercon V, the FNR5 and 2006+ Mazdas are spec'd for Mazda M-V. Yes they are different. I have been told that the fluids are similar but Amsoil ATF meets the specs for all of them and I've been using it for 30k+ miles now and it's great in all conditions.

Read:
http://www.finishlineperformance.com/pdf/tribute/05-005-08-1928.pdf

Greater viscosity at low temp. How can 1 fluid meets both specs?

Recommended for everything. Meets nothing.

TSB says,
USING ATF OTHER THAN ATF M-V (TYPE M5) IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS DESIGNED TO USE ATF M-V (TYPE M5) MAY CAUSE SHIFT QUALITY COMPLAINTS.

They need to trim how many ATF fluids are needed. There are just too many! I decided to do a UOA one more time then try Amsoil. If the UOA is not perfect and/or the Amsoil does not help the car is gone and I am going back to a manuel trans.

Thanks

Bad info. His tranny is the same 5 spd as mine and it's the FNR-5 which is the same as the Mazda MV. Mercon v is NOT spec for this tranny.

Actually, Mazda's first year for the FNR5 was the 2006 Mazda 6i. If his Mazda is a 2004, he has the FN4A or whatever it is. Same fluid requirements, though.

+1

The 04-05 Mazda3 2.3 auto was a 4 speed. The 5 speed didn't show up until 2006.

The subject is an 07 Fusion, not a 04 Mazda.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I decided I had to do something so I was able to get some Amsoil this weekend and ran 8 quarts in it. It shifts a lot better but time will tell.

How did you run the ATF through? Drain plug? If so, how many quarts did you get out a time?

I tried the trans return hose only got 4 quarts out. Then refilled and ran 20 miles. Then drained 3.5 quarts out of drain plug.

After driving for a couple days it is much better with Amsoil. Don't know if it will hold up but my suggestion if you have this trans don't worry about the cost. Use the best fluid you can get and change it sooner than later.

Last update. On the advice of a mechanic who has tried this I used Seafoam Trans additive. It has helped a lot in my Fusion and Ranger. Use half a can, drive a couple of days then change the filter and add the other half. It really made a difference.
