this is my cousins car,and i usually maintain it for her. being that she lives 25 miles away from me and we never have the time to meet so i can change her oil, she went rather long on her last oci. i changed her oil back in may with some Castrol GTX 10W30 HM (had extra it specs 5W30)and a fram XG 4386. it had 85,023 at that time. well i checked her mileage last night, she had 92,246 miles! she went 7,223 miles this time and it used half a quart. could any harm have been done running that oil this long? again its not neglect, she does not remind me when it needs to be done and were both busy. i was thinking of another Fram XG and some Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 in the event that this would happen again.

I doubt anything bad would happen to the engine. Now if it was an oil burner and ran low for a long period, then it might develop troubles. However, only half a quart is nothing to worry about. And living in LA where it is not cold is a plus. But I personally would not push it further than that mileage. Maybe use the extended drain oil in the future like you state

You will be fine. Regular M1 can go that distance also. Use the Newer fram Ultra, its more efficient than the former Xtended guard.

Seems every oil change guy in a family gets hit with one or two of those long intervals every once in a while. Over summer months and in your warm climate, I doubt any damage was done. Not that I'd tell her that.
You could go to Mobil 1 Extended Performance or scare the mess out of her and stay with the GTX at 5k intervals. That would be my choice. You get the car more often and can keep on top of the other maintenace too.

My bet is to go for better oil, so if the likely happens repeatedly then no harm is done as the oil is still within its normal lifespan.

What is the price difference?

Under $10 I suspect, or over 7500 miles is around 13 cents per hundred miles. She would save more than that in fuel with the superior Full Synthetic oil if you ask me.

At the prices you pay in the US I would run Amsoil as it, like all other oils is probably as cheap as Pepsi Cola!

Now I can buy Mobil 1 and Castrol at Costco I would never even consider anything less than Full Synthetic.

If I lived in the US I would use the best stuff going, dino wouldn't even be on my radar.

i think ill go with MC semi syn 5W30 and a P1 filter for 5k intervals. Wasnt this engine in the highlander backspeced for 5W20? if so, can i use the Toyota 0W20?

According to the TGMO application chart a 2006 highlander can run all 3. If an external leak was the reason a High Mileage oil was used fix it before switching to 0w20.
