I have a 2005 WRx ive done a lot of upgrades on the car. The only thing that is probably still stock is the engine and some of its internals. im boosting about 21 lbs i have about 45k miles on it. Heres the big question! what oil and oil filter should i be using?! I live in New Jersey where in the summer it gets hot winter gets cold and where im stationed at is abou 21 miles away. when i have my weekends i drive to the family house every week and thats about 75 miles away.. So help me out what should i be using for my rex?

I run Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 in my 08 STI. A lot of turbo subie guys seem to really like it. If you're going to be doing modest oil change intervals I'd say go with this. Even on the track I'd trust this oil completely. If you're a spirited driver, do track days or want to extend your OCI even further I'd say go with Redline 5W-40.

What are your mods? How are you tuned, and what did you dyno at?

Red Line 0W-40 or 5W-40. You might be able to get away with a robust 30 grade (Syntec 0W-30, Red Line xW-30) depending on your mods, tune, daily driving conditions, oil change interval. Those weekend trips are probably fairly easy on the oil. Rotella T for shorter intervals of 3-5k.

Stick with OEM oil filters for their proper by-pass setting of 23 psi's. The closest aftermarket would be the Purolator PureOne PL14460 with a 20-25 psi setting.

Where do one find the filter bypass pressure ?

What about WIX and Bosch filters ?

I currently run on stg II EJ20 engine at 18psi
with 4+k miles OCI
warmer months - Rotella T 5w-40
colder months - Syntec GC 0w-30
I design and manufacture my own AOS and and i dont loose much oil - maybe 1/4 qt after 2-3k and i make up with BLOB

It is thicker but the new Rotella T6 5w40 is thinner and has an improved basestock (it is starting to appear on the shelves now). No it will not be bad for your car. With the Turbo you should use a stout synthetic. Mobil 1 makes a 5w40 TDT oil that is great too. Otherwise stick with a good synthetic rated for your car (see the manual).

thanxs guys for all the replys! my car says to put in 5w30. should i be putting other higher or lower oils?
Mods i have is the normal short ram aem intake, turbo bak exhaust, upgrqaded up pipe and of course down pipe wit the turbo back exhaust, larger top mount intercooler, reciruculation/atmospheric blow off valve, flashed ecu, IHI Vf34 turbo @ 21 lbs of boost , bigger injectors cant remember the cc's of the top of my head. Thats what i can think of from the top of my head what ive done engine wise.

So, so far oil wise i still dont know which one i should use so help me out guys now that you know a bit more of what i have in the car. Oil filter i guess i should get the oem one or puralator ive read a lot from other people that this is what they stick to. wheres the best place to find these oil filters at?

We are suggesting you use a slightly thicker HDEO (heavy duty engine oil) because of your turbo and your performance mods. As far as filters go, Mobil 1, PureOne, Wix, Napa Gold are all good filters.

I would use either Mobil 1 5w40 TDT, Mobil 1 0w40, Mobil 1 10w30 EP, Rotella T6 5w40 or Castrol Syntec 0w30 (the made in Germany stuff at Autozone).

I'd add Redline 5W-40 to the list, but, to answer your question, I'd say grade is irrelevant. Any of these oils will work, but the best way to find a good oil is to compare product data sheets to find the properties you need. A low Noack volatility and a 100C viscosity of >12 cSt (what I like) is a start. Look around in the UOA section for turbo subie analyses to see which oils hold up as well. It's all about whether you want to spend a bunch of money for peace of mind or simply want something that'll serve your purpose...

Maybe on the weekend. I take the bus to Manhattan weekdays. 04 silver FXT with leeberbs tint. Nothing too flashy after having my black '03 WRX with 17" Prodrive P1's stolen in 2003.

And maybe Red Line 10W30/0W40. Syntec 0W-30 from Autozone/Pep Boys is good and usually easy to find, but I would do an analysis to make sure it's right for your application. IMO, just avoid your typical Energy Conserving xW-30.

Out of these which ones should i use for winter time and summer time I would use either Mobil 1 5w40 TDT, Mobil 1 0w40, Mobil 1 10w30 EP... the only thing i was worried bout is that my car says to use 5w30 but i guess i can use others. this will probably b the last one i post about questions hopefully.. i jus really didnt understand the whole thing about using either 5w30 or the others that you guys are talking about

Any if the above-listed can be used year round.

A 0W-30 will be at a lower viscosity than a 5W-30 when cold, but just about the same at operating temp.

A 5W-30 will have similar viscosity to a 5W-40 when cold, but will not be as thick at operating temp.

Most turbo subie guys prefer a 40 weight. In most cases, a 0W will be more volatile and shear down more easily (not that it will, necessarily) than a 10W.

That's a common misconception because it's what's stamped on the filler cap. If you check the owner's manual you will see it specifies up to 20w50 for severe service. 5w40 seems to deliver good results for many, or a thick 30 weight like GC.

Yep, and the manual also says that a 10W can be used down to -4F. With the low pour point of these synthetics, -4F is a breeze.

The first number is the winter rating, but does not necessarily measure how thick the oil is. It's a measurement of how well the oil will flow (Cold Cranking Viscosity).

What engine management are you using? Are you tuned? Cobb AccessPort?
