That's a common misconception because it's what's stamped on the filler cap. If you check the owner's manual you will see it specifies up to 20w50 for severe service. 5w40 seems to deliver good results for many, or a thick 30 weight like GC.

Yep, and the manual also says that a 10W can be used down to -4F. With the low pour point of these synthetics, -4F is a breeze.

The first number is the winter rating, but does not necessarily measure how thick the oil is. It's a measurement of how well the oil will flow (Cold Cranking Viscosity).

What engine management are you using? Are you tuned? Cobb AccessPort?

i did a stage 2 reflash

im just gona go ahead with castrol 5w30.. cant really find castrol 0w30. i spoke with a lot of subi owners in nj and this is what they prefer on their cars.. but if people think other wise on here im glad to hear some feedback.. thanxs to everyone also that responded!

Autozones carry castrol 0w30. You will be fine with the Syntec with the very conservative factory OCI. Syntec 5w30 though is not the toughest of engine oils (it is very different than the 0w30). If it were me though I would be using a 5w40 oil, most any will do. If you want to go with 5w30 use Mobil 1 5w30 EP.

I think a lot of us would prefer one of the aforementioned oils, but Castrol will be fine if you change it out at a reasonable OCI. If you're really curious send a sample out after 3kmi to see how things are holding up.

The good thing about oil is that it's pretty cheap to change it out if you change your mind based on how the current oil feels or the results of a UOA.

Syntec 5w30 is the thinnest XXw30 I know of! Even EDGE is slightly thicker at 100c!

As lipad mentioned, Syntec 5W-30 is very different from the 0W-30. The 0W-30 is on the upper end of the 30 grade range, has a higher High Temp High Shear (more stable), has a better anti-wear additive pack and made with better synthetic base stocks. More info here.

It's easy to find 0W-30 in NJ at Autozone (and maybe Pep Boys or Strauss??). If you don't use that, I would go with Syntec 5W-40 in a Stage II IMO. If you're running rich, which even stock turbo subies do, the 0W-30 or 5W-40 should hold up to fuel dilution better than the 5W-30.

I would also recommend doing a used oil analysis at around 3k miles to see how it's holding up. Try http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-test-kits.php and then you can post your results in the Used Oil Analysis for feedback.

Wow, I didn't know that Syntec 5W-30 is only 9.7 cSt's at 100C. That will be a 20 grade once the key is turned.

Sorry Edge is not a thick 30 weight oil
inj fact 5w-30 is closer to 20 than 30
May want to chk the VOA

well after a bit of research i went with the 5w30 castrol edge and the purolator oil filter.. i drove the car about 100 miles in the first 2 days with the radio off and tell you the truth im quite pleased! engine is nice an silent and it runs pretty smooth.. better then the other oils ive tried out
