Pulled the pan today, easy job don't know why i did not do it sooner! The pan had silicone on it FROM the factory, no gasket..Go figure....Wondering what fluid to use, ATF 3 or a 4....Replacing the filter and have cleaned to pan ..About 3/8 inch of guck on the magnet...Vehicle has 155000 km or 96000 miles on it mostly highway..

An 2005 will have ATF+4 in it from the factory.

Best to flush, but doing the pan is OK.

That's ridiculous... It's because of the design, fluid isn't passing through the various circuits of the transmission in park and they want the fluid level to be at the full mark while fluid is circulating through the circuits. This only happens in Neutral and in gear.
What you should do is start the engine, warm to operating temperature (20 minute drive is best). From idling in park, put the car into drive for 5 seconds with your foot on the break, then put it into reverse for 5 seconds then put it into neutral. Proceed to check the ATF fluid with it in neutral.
Set the emergency brake and a wheel chuck behind/in-front of the wheel for safety. Or have someone help you while you step on the brake.
This will fill all the circuits with oil and will give you a accurate reading while checking it in neutral.
Also make sure you are on a level surface.

Thanks for all the info..Pulled the pan, very simple...Guess what, Chrysler used silicone from the factory on the pan, no gasket...Got a kit,filter and gasket where included, and some ATF+4 fluid will finish tomorrow...
Not sure what gasket you purchased but stay away from the Cork ones. They seal at first then begin to leak shortly there after from my experience. Go with a silicone based gasket instead.

I know you speak of Chrysler vehicles from experience, but my '05 Caravan owners manual states "Place the gear selector momentarily in each gear position ending with the lever in P (PARK)....It goes on to explain reading the the fluid level on the dipstick.
Why the discrepancy between the manual and your recommendation to measure the level in N (NEUTRAL)?
Do you have an opinion about what position to put the gearshift in during a cooler line flush?

Neutral or Park is fine given the design for this year and later vehicles.
They went to "Park" being printed in the manual for safety and so that it could be performed by one person. The older ones had to be done in Neutral as the fluid would drain away from the circuits in park.
Either/or is fine, whatever works for you.
