I have a 2002 Jeep GC 4.7L V8 with 148,000 miles. I changed the oil every 3000 when using dino oil and 5000 if I am using synthetic oil. I do tow a boat on the weekends. I am adding about 2 quarts of oil in between 3000 oil changes. 5w-30.

The PCV has been changed, the compression is good, no leaks. Engine runs smooth. So, why the oil consumption? Should I use heavier weight oil? Any tips?

Very important questions here for you. There is a baffle under the oil filler cap. I have seen many many vehicles driving around without it. Not sure if some people take it out to fill the oil? ( no need). On the vehicles that I saw driving around without the baffle they did use oil. Double check and make sure it is still there. Many quickie lube places can not be trusted to do anything right so I imagine this is why many no longer have it. If you do still have your baffle then you can also remove it and make sure there is no sludge underneath it that may be trapping oil for the PCV to suck up. IF all is well and all is clean the +1 on the HM oil.

America must have really bad quick lube places because the chains here are great and I've never heard a horror story, well nothing local anyways. Maybe in Ontario but not here.
As far as the op's consumption issues I guess you will have to start with the high mileage oil options and if they don't help you may have to go up a grade in the high mileage flavour.

How do you remove the baffle? Just tug on it?

Yes, just pull it straight up.

How long has it been using oil? I have a 4.7 in my 2000 Dakota with 120K. I don't need to add any oil ever. I'm wondering when I'll need to start!
