I changed the oil in my focus about a month ago and I looked in the book at Walmart and as soon as I seen Focus in the book I got the filter it said fit my car (Motorcraft 2005) well when I came home and was lookin thru my owners manual it says I need a 400S. The cars from 2000 and 2002 on say it needs the FL-2005, my 2001 says it need a 400S......Any ideas why?

Isn't the Focus available with an SOHC 2.0L (Split Port 2000) or a DOHC 2.0L engine (Zetec)?

I'm pretty sure the SOHC 2.0L takes an FL-400S.

The DOHC 2.0L takes the other filter.

Its printed in my owners manual 400S and in the Fram book at Walmart. That is what I am going to put in next time, but I was just wondering why my year is so special

If your car has the SPI, use the 400S( s for silicon bypass). If it has the Zetec, use the 2005.

If you look in the 400S, you can see all the way to the top of the filter. With the 2005 and it's copies, a valve is visable slightly below the opening.

Wix lista the 51315 for the Zetec, 51516 for the SPI

Purolator lists the 25230 for the Zetec, 20195 for the SPI

Fram lists the 3600 for the SPI, 8316 for the Zetec.

So Tenderloin are you thinking Ford printed the wrong thing in my owners manual? I am not doubting all these sites you sent me, but I am just wanted to go by recommendations till I am out of warranty in Sept.

If you have a Zetec, use the fl-2005, if you have the "split port induction" use the FL-400. Disreguard the owners manual, it may be for the wrong engine, and I've seen mistakes in them before.

So what is the difference in the filters? If the thread, gasket, ABDV, and bypass are the same, I would use the bigger one if clearance isn't an issue. If the thread or gasket are different, it should be easy to figure out the right one. A different bypass or ABDV would be harder to determine. Just don't take it to an Iffy lube.

The 2005 has two ADBVs, this has been discussed before. You can see the other ADBV by looking into the center hole. The FL-400 is a little longer, but shouldn't be used on the Zetec.

My X had a 2001 2.0L Zetec. Same issue - 400S in the owner’s manual for the ZETEC and 2005 referenced in all the filter guides I could find. Also called several dealers and their sources recommended the 2005.

I'm fairly confident you want the 2005 because I pulled the factory filter off her car and it was identical internally to a 2005 (two ADBV's).

Thanks guys, I am going to stick with the 2005 after all the info presented to me. Now I just hope the Motorcraft 5w20 does me right
