For what it is worth, I have seen an engine damaged from using the wron filter on a 2.3 Focus. It is very vulnerable. Actually I think that is a bad design feature on an otherwise very good engine.
The new engine is the Mazda 4-cyl, isn't it? Don't rule out the Mazda dealer if you want an alternative to the Ford dealer.
I've never seen damage caused by using the 'wrong' filter that had similar specs.
The FL400s/FL2005 are the oversized options, if you have the room.
There are some that are fans of Toyota filters. OEM Toyota/Lexus filters are also an option and priced well when on sale at the dealer or bulk purchased online.

Although it is the same engine, Mazda uses a cartridge style filter.
Do not use the Fl-400 for 2005, as they are to long and will be at risk. There are numerous reports of these filters being damaged by curbs and road debris when being used on the Duratec Ford Focus.

Heck you could have gone back to Ford parts department and got one for like 6 bucks. What is the problem. On my neon I use FL-300 still above the subframe and get 5 full quart capacity that way.
The fl-300 will not fit on the 2003+ Ford Focus filter mount as it is to wide. It is possible to modify the mount to accept these wider filters, but it would require grinding away some metal.
The only viable option for using a larger filter on this car is a remote mount.

Does the FL-910 have an ADBV? The packaging doesn't give much of a clue, but the filter appears to have a vertical orientation when installed on the 2007 Focus, maybe it doesn't need one. My 2005 Ranger uses the FL-820S; I always interpreted the "S" designation as a silicone ADBV, but not sure if the lack of the "S" means no ADBV, or simply not a silicone ADBV. Any thoughts?

Well, the Wix xref for the FL910 has no ADBV ..so it seems you're right.
The PH3614 xref to MC is the FL793 ..which has an ADBV

I have found that most FL-910 replicas I buy actually do have an ADB. Even the wix...however, they could have changed since the last time I used one.
The 910 is used on other vehicles as well, including some Harleys.
However, on the Focus it is not necessary due to the filters orientation.

as was said there was the issue with the location of the filter. a friend of mine used to to heavy line at Galpin Ford. they had numerous focii that had engine damage from the filter getting knocked off by a curb or concrete parking stop. they considered it customer damage and refused warrenty coverage.
