2001 F150 transmission (4r70w) slow to engage (3=5 seconds) into drive after shifting out of park or neutral. Shifts fine while driving and shifts into reverse fine. I dropped the pan and changed the filter. Problem still exists.

Sounds like my neon right before the transmission went out.

Internal leak in the Forward Clutch apply circuit, Only one possible leak point could be fixed without removing the unit.....

For the 2001 model year, Ford eliminated the Separator Plate support plate that sat below the 3rd Accumulator. Over time the Separator plate cracks & bows out from the Valve Body causing a crossleak between the Forward Clutch & Direct Clutch circuits.

I must advise you that this rarely fixes the unit long term as the Forward & Direct frictions are already distressed from slipping (Forward) & Dragging (Direct).

So can I just replace the separator plate or should I replace the whole valve body?

What's the maintenance history on this transmission?
Mileage?
How clean were the magnets?
Did you do one fill or several (drain & fill)?
Which fluid has been used?

Unknown. It was a county vehicle.
205000 miles
dirty
one so far
I used Mercon V

In this case I would do two more drain & fills, then another pan-drop after a week / month, to clean up the system. I would hesitate do anything else until the magnets stay clean. Cleaning up the system might be all you need but I would start there.

Was the little plastic plug in the bottom of the pan? That's an indication that the transmission was never opened up for service before.

My 2001 F150 (also a 4R70) had a torque converter drain plug. It was nice for servicing, but made me a bit nervous. The plug is very small and easy to over torque (strip) or leave too loose.
