I get it, although I question your description of "need". When the wife was shopping for her current '21 Camry Hybrid, she noticed that only the base model was rated for over 50mpg--all other models were like 45. The difference? tires. The upsized into a wider & lower tire on any option package. To her that was just adding insult to injury, she was buying for the mpg, but would have liked one or two of the optional thing (mostly the steering wheel heater). It's not really a trend though, it's just the natural progression of the industry. Look at the wheels and tires on a Ford Model A. Things change to suit the current needs.
I get it, it's a big market, and most have spoken. But "need"? gimme a break. If I could just have a compact car with a reasonable amount of NVH (instead of trying to shame me for buying the smaller/cheaper car) then I wouldn't "need" large wheels to clear the large brakes to deal with the large vehicle mass.
Tilting at windmills I know. Just frustrated at the current market.
