Looking to add a gas saver to my fleet.

I have spotted a 1999 Honda Civic EX 135,413 miles. Dealer is asking $4400. No way I will give that price. Just wondering what you all think about this year of Civic? Any experiences to share would be greatly appreciated!

I have no experience with the Ex model which has a D16Y8 VTEC engine, though it highly coveted and always completely removed from all of the 96-00 Civic Ex models at the local Pick-N-Pull junkyard.

My experience with the D16Y7 found in the CX,DX,LX models is nothing short of exceptional.

DX/VP Civic put on 320k miles before I had to replace it with a ZC JDM engine, I performed no maintenance at the time of my life.

LX Civic current, is still running very strong and I absolutely love it. I have always gotten 32-36 mpg Highway in those model Civic.

1999-2000 Civic EX Coupe was always a car I have always wanted, even now. But all the [censored] ricers ruin it by modding them or abusing them to the fullest.

If I find an accident free, clean carfax civic of that model and year, I personally will pay a pretty penny for it.

The good news, for Civics, is that they have moved on to diesel trucks. The bad news - in 10 years, we won't be able to find a nice diesel pickup that wasn't turned into a bro truck.

LOL

Without seeing said Civic I'd have to say a finding a 99 Civic with only ~135k miles would be rare, very low miles imo. Guess I'm saying that's where my first skepticism would start. This from one who has maintained an 01 Civic EX with now 205+k miles since new.

From what I know it is very good generation Civic. But, before I'd purchase the vehicle described, I'd want to find out as much history as I could about said Civic. Beyond that, I'd want it put on a lift and gone over with fine tooth comb before purchase. If it passes all those tests, only then would I negotiate price.

If everything checks out with a mechanic this should be a fantastic car for years to come. Check all the fluid for signs of freshness, shocks, bushings, etc. Hopefully the timing belt was done and no body damage. If you can check all of those boxes you've found a really nice car.

Buy it or tell me where it's at, because I want it. I love that generation of Civic and I'd be willing to pay a slightly inflated price for one that was in good condition with a manual gearbox.

D16Y8 was almost bulletproof and IMO the 99-00 was the best looking body style civic made. Excellent ride, ran good for what it was and gets great MPG's. Price is inflated because of all the ricer kids snatching them up, and they will pay that price.

At 135k, as long as its a 5 speed that thing is good to go for another 150k!

I bought mine (2000 HX) in 8/2012, private party, and got a deal on it. Listed $3500 on Craigslist for a while, got them down to $2700. Standard maintenance & tune-up to get it back on track at ~140k when purchased.

They're good, reliable, economy cars. Seats suck, so I swapped them for some Prelude buckets for long-ride comfort. With all the hype surrounding Civics, owning this one made me miss my old '93 Mazda MX6 2.0L - that car felt like a step up in class compared to a Civic (which it may have been off-the-lot, but was way cheaper used), and as reliable. 25% larger engine and still pulled 32-34 mpg easily. Main reason I jumped on my Civic, was that it was an HX, 5spd and reasonably priced. Letting my sister borrow it for her long commute currently. 40mpg helps with $4+/gal gas.

They're economy cars and shouldn't' be worth a premium. Plenty of other options out there too.

Just got rid of '99 EX sedan. It was a great car and the engine was bullet proof, as long as it never overheats. Mine had been stolen in a previous life and had a salvage title but still gave us 100K miles that were trouble free. On the highway, sticking the cruise at 65 mph (with slightly larger, 185/70R14 tires) it would give 36-40 mpg all day long.

I would tend to agree, they are an economy car that runs for a stupidly long time.

That's a decent price as long as it's in good shape. My 99 EX just got totaled while parked in front of our house. Other than that unfortunate incident, my Civic gave me 75,000 trouble free miles (currently at 145k). It is a solid and good looking car.

I'm not sure if it's worth it to fix it.

In 8 years of ownership, I changed the following:

-timing belt
-water pump
-tensioner
-thermostat
-hoses
-radiator
-some gaskets due to oil leaks
-plugs and wires
-and front brakes

We had a 5 speed 1998 Civic EX sedan with 220,000 miles and we only had.....
$80 cracked exhaust manifold
$90 Denso O2 sensor go bad
Idle Air Control valve got grimy and caused idle problem, cleaned mesh screen

Besides regular oil/filter changes, cap/rotor/plugs, fuel filter , timing belt and water pump our Civic was ULTRA RELIABLE. Still had the original clutch and trans shifted like butter.

Surfstar,
I got dibs on your Civic when you want to sell it.

I would absolutely go crazy if I saw a mint 1998-2005 Civic HX with 5 speed trans and ultra low miles.

Sorry, but I love this picture. Everyone's point their finger at someone else. You'd see this kind of thing on a "caption this" website.
