models, engines and years affected.

NOTE: PLEASE REFER TO THE VEHICLE APPLICATION LIST LATER IN THIS TSB
FOR A COMPLETE LIST OF VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THIS TSB.

ISSUE:
Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade for servicing
most gasoline and flexible fueled vehicles.

ACTION:
All 2001 and 2002 vehicles where SAE 5W-20 is specified should be serviced
at the recommended oil change intervals using SAE 5W-20. This oil is an
improved formulation to improve fuel economy. Testing has validated this
viscosity grade can be used in many previous model year vehicles. It is
recommended ALL vehicles on the following Vehicle Application Listing be
service with SAE 5W-20.

All 2001-2002 vehicles other than those listed in the "Exception 2001
Vehicles" or "Exception 2002 Vehicles" chart are being filled with SAE 5W-20
motor oil at the factory and should also be serviced with SAE 5W-20 oil.

I can read this two ways. One way it tells me 5w20 is ok. Another way tells me to stick with 5w30.

I have no issues sticking with 5w30. It still runs great. Just trying to get some clarification.

The 4.0 was never backspecked for 5W20.
My 2008 with a 4.0 specifies 5W30.

Hmmm I didn't see the 6 cyl Ranger on the "5w20 OK list" so I'd be sticking with 5w30 also. I guess Ford tested all those engines somehow for their compatibility with 5w20.

2001+ is the 4.0 soch engine. Entirely different.

That's how I read it too.

Not fixing what isn't broke. Just curious about the tab.

Not the same engine. You have the SOHC 4.0. The OP's 1996 Ranger has the OHV 4.0. Same displacement, but it's a completely different engine.

Regardless, I would just stick with 5W-30.

You can get your best clarification by buying a quart of 5W-20 an pouring some of it into a glass jar. Swish it around a little bit. Now ask yourself if you would trust that oil to keep your engine lubricated.....

Seriously.

What does swishing motor oil around in a jar have to do with an internal combustion engine.
I know you're bored buddy. Isn't there a Honda forum you can troll?
Tell them your views on their beloved 20 grade.

Op.

It's possible if the engine isn't operated in a severe way that a 5w-20 is adequate however when in doubt go thick. No engine ever fried going too thick.
Too thin however has done engines in.
Not that there's a huge difference between the 2 grades, but why take a chance.
As far as the tsb goes I didn't think any 4.0 engines were back spec'd but I have t paid close attention either

Merk, warm a 5w-30 and a 10w-30 up to 100 C and see if you can tell the difference. Your engine isn't lubricated at the temperatures at which you're experimenting. Maybe you could cool them both down to -30 C and try "swishing" either of them around. Of course, -30 C has no bearing to you, since you'll never start in those temperatures. Room temperature has no bearing either, since you'll be there all of a few seconds, and then both 10w-30 and 5w-30 are going to get much, much thinner than what you were swirling around.

At engine operating temperatures, 5w-30 and 10w-30 in ILSAC grades are completely interchangeable from a viscosity perspective. You do know that GC 0w-30 is significantly thicker at operating temperatures than your precious 10w-30, don't you?

I can also tell how well an oil can lubricate by rubbing it between my fingers, but with the 5W-20, it would probably soak through my skin before I had a chance to test it out.

Oh my word, the Cologne engines are not back-specced to 5W-20. So easy to Google! I'm sure that many of the Google search results lead right back here to BITOG threads!

Maybe we should all chip in and buy a Merk a blow up doll??

I like swishing oil around before I pour it on the ground for dust control... I like to look at the shiny bits of metal

I wouldn't put 0W-20 in any Ford V-6 pre-2004. They rattle too much ... I'm old school, but go at least 10W-30 if you've crossed the 50K mark, and certainly if you are out of warranty.

I've gotten 240K+ out of a few using Delo400 after a 100K...

I have Googled. That's how I found the tsb by accident.

I have no want to use 5w20. Just asking about the tsb in relation to my vehicle.

I'm not sure where your confusion is. The TSB clearly says to not use 5w20. Nowhere in there does it say that 5w20 is OK to use in a 4.0 Ranger. So what are you confused about? Just stick with 5w30.

The first part is what confused me honestly.

I'm wasn't gonna switch from 5w30 anyway because I know the 5w20 back spec is to help with current epa laws.

This truck isn't daily driven anymore so I'm not concerned with mpgs. It actually gets about 20 mpgs which ain't bad.
