1996 BMW 740il M62B44 Mobil1 0w40 Waited for timer to run out ~3yrs

If we did some math wizardry based of Fe of 14 PPM converted over to 11 PPM BS Avg. Comes out to around 7,127 Miles. OP Does that sound close? Some are saying run to get 5w-30/5w-40, I say run to get 5w-50 to protect those bearings for the rest of their lives.

I wouldn't doubt it, I don't put a ton of miles on it.

5w-50, W0w, I should really run something that thick?

No, those "additives" are usually just a "thickener". You can just get the thicker oil instead. Those "additives" are big money & are not regulated. Save your money.
So they have M1 15w50, can I use that?

Otherwise I'll have to wait on a delivery for 5w50

TPN report came in.

I think I will start a new thread on that as this one evolved into what intervals and Type I should be using and that report is what I should have posted to answer my initial question in the first place (thanks for letting me know that guys) which this thread has still not really addressed.

Don’t! 15W50 doesn’t have standards that LL01 does. 5W50 will shear down fast. You need shear stable oil and oils that meet MB229.5 and LL01 approvals.

Not sure what that means except it has to do with the HTHS?

Are you saying don't use the M1 5w50?

Or are you saying the 15w does not have LL01 but the 5w does?

I just keep getting more confused by the post here. :(

Trying to read this right now but its way above my head.

5W50 will become 5W40 very fast.
15W50 is really average oil that is mostly used on track in some engines.
Stick to LL01 (no, 5W50 is not LL01). Reason is that those approvals have specific tests that have to be met, including wear, deposits, timing chain wear (BMW has very low limits on that) etc.

One of the reasons is because you’re not making much of an effort to understand approvals. For the most part you need to forget grade and brand and just focus on an approval. Way back in post #8 a list of acceptable approvals was given, at this point if suggest you pick the least expensive oil at Walmart that has one of those. Or just stick to BMW Longlife-01 since that is the most simple.

^This.
And, why approvals are invented? Because average driver doesn’t know and doesn’t want to know anything about oils. It says : use xyz, then that is where debate ends. Use xyz, or in your caee LL01 which supersedes all BMW requirements prior to 2001 including LL98.

The 5w-50 has HTHS 4.4 15w-50 might work if you're in a warmer climate but I'd stick with the 5w-50. All oils sheer & starting from a thicker oil is going to still end thicker than lower grades. Trying to stick w/ MB specifications most likely limiting factor and your high mileage MB needs some 5w-50. Give it a try & see how you like it. Get it tested if you'd like.

Gotta stop that sheer.
