1992 Honda Accord Valvetrain Pic - 208,000mi

Above is a picture of the valvetrain on my friend's roommate's 1992 Honda Accord. The spark plug well seals were leaking, and she's looking to sell it, so she had me pull the cover and replace the seals. My friend assisted.

Apologies for the poor lighting; we were doing the work at about 1am. The camera is the little 3MP camera on my phone and everything is illuminated by an LED Maglite. Hardly ideal, I know.

There was no visible sludge or other goop build-up, only a thin yellow coating (varnish?) on various parts. In certain areas where oil does not regularly flow over (e.g. the wall of the compartment), oil appears to have baked on a bit over the years and the coating is a bit darker, but it's still of negligible thickness. The cams and other moving parts looked great. Places where oil pooled were a bit dark, but still looked good.

After re-gasketing the valve cover and torquing it down to spec, we changed the oil to ensure any environmental contaminants were removed. Observing the new oil getting pumped around the valvetrain by watching through the filler hole, I observed the new oil seemed to be a light brown color (as opposed to amber). I presume this is normal, and due to simply to mixing with any previous oil in the system.

Oil was changed regularly at ~3,000mi at Brake Masters by the owner. Unknown brand and grade, but likely Pennzoil Yellow Bottle 10W-30, as that seems to be the bulk oil of choice at Brake Masters in Tucson. Had a yellow Pennzoil filter. We replaced it with SuperTech High Mileage 10W-30 and a Fram Tough Guard filter (it was late, Wal-Mart was open, and it was cheap and good). The Pennzoil filters seem really flimsy, and my filter wrench dented it severely while trying to remove it. Sadly, I left my preferred type of wrench at home (which removes anything with ease) and had to use the grippy-claw-type Fram-brand filter wrench I keep around as a backup instead.

Looks pretty good for 208,000 miles. Anyone in Tucson looking to buy a well-used Accord with a pretty solid engine/transmission and a borderline interior (seats ripped, floor mats are stained, etc.)?

Looks pretty good for over 200k. Those older Honda's seem to stay pretty clean with regular maintenance.

That's not an H22 (dohc, vtec), which was only available in 93+ Preludes (within the US), it's an F22A (sohc, non-vtec).

Yup. I swear this F22-powered Accored might even be slower than the 2.2ohv cavalier my fiance used to have, but at least it gets me there.
 
I have the same car, engine currently has about 200000 miles on her and still going strong. Those F22A1 engines are probably one of the most reliable engines ever produced along with the 1.8 8valve from the VW mark 2 series(85-92). You see so many of those old CB7 accords still on the road its amazing.

Oh yeah theses cars werent the fastest especially if you have the AT version but man they will get you where you need to go.

My next car is surely going to be another Accord!
 
Those Accord 2.2's were great engines. My friends folks had one that my friend drove all the time. He then bought it from them years later.

It got marginal maintenance, had one tranny replacement, but the last time I saw it, it had over 200k miles and still ran fine. He's since gotten rid of it, but it held on forever....
 
I don't know what you guys are talking about when you say those are slow. I have a F22A6 and it moves pretty darn fast even with an auto trans. Although, I do have the 140 hp EX model. Those spark plug seals are a known issue, I just had mine replaced almost a year ago when I had the timing belt done.

Well they arent super slow, they are very peppy off the start but when in motion and you want to get up there quickly you have to really give it some to get anywhere. The seals around the spark plug chambers are a common problem, i had to change mine recently along with the valve cover gaskets, luckily i didnt have to change the lower chamber seal below the cam.

Just the LX here, so no V-TACCKK!!!! but yes...VERY slow.

I've driven nothing slower than a 13 second car for the last 4 years, so jumping into a car for the winter that would struggle to run a 17.0 is pretty hilarious. If I don't wring this thing out over 3k rpm from every stop, I swear traffic behind me is going to end up in my tailpipe.

Just skip the 6th Gen. 1998-02. Transmissions are terrible. I know as I own one! Even with regular fluid changes they all begin to slip. That said however, I have owned my for 10.5 years and the only problem I really have is mine kills alternator every 60-70,000 miles. Third one is in there right now.

yeah I heard that, I was looking at the 2003 - 2005 generation

The 6th gens are great if you went with the F23 engine tied to the manual transmission. My brother now has ~120k on what was previously mine and while he's not nearly as easy on the clutch as I was, it's still running great on the stock clutch.
