The oil sucked out of the filter housing was glittery. The engine head was replaced by the previous owner 2 years ago. Unsure of oil age. Maybe break in on the head? Replaced oil with Valvoline premium blue 15w-40. The engine does not smoke. Decent compression.

Oil analysis from a 71-year-old Jeep.
Also, the average numbers are from 1,100-mile intervals.

So, are all these old Jeeps parade cars?
More than likely. This one will be lucky if it sees 500 miles a year. My ‘63 CJ5 is lucky if it sees 100 miles a year. It doesn’t get driven on the road (yet). I might suck some oil out for a sample out of curiosity.

Great to see a fellow Willys owner. I own a couple of WW2 Jeeps. I'd try the Valvoline VR1 oil next time. Any pics on the Jeep? Honestly an engine rebuild on these Willys is cake. What's your plan with this thing? Is it restored?

‘74 CJ5 (304), ‘63 CJ5, and ‘53 M38A1

I run VR1 in the ‘74 since despite its crazy low miles, it never sat for very long and had regular oil changes. My grandfather bought it new in 1974.

The ‘63 CJ5 has not be touched much and sits more. I also don’t know much about its history. I’ll likely continue to run a basic 10-30 with a zinc additive or that Valvoline 15-40.

The M38a1 has been semi restored by previous owner. Engine has had some extensive work done but I’d like to rebuild it in the future. I’m focusing on getting the brakes working properly and some paint work.
