I've seen several people on here that have run 5w40 in their gas engined vehicles, a majority of them are turbo charged though, I think. I also know of a guy at work that has always run 15w40 in his ford van. Is this really safe to do? I thought all the extra P and Z in it would damage the cat's? And yes, I realize the newer CJ oil has alot less of both in it, but wouldn't that still be to much?

An absolute waste in my opinion. Will waste fuel over the life of your vehicle. Even if it hurts fuel economy 0.3 to 0.5 MPG, that will add up real fast.

I respectfully disagree. I ran 5-30 and 5-40 back to back. There is no difference in MPG beyond normal variation. But the 5w40 had more stable oil pressure, and lasted a full 3k without using any oil, vs the 5-30 using a half quart every 1000 miles. But, 98% of what I use the truck for is towing.... YMMV.

I've run Tection Extra and Delvac 15W40's in my little 2.3l turbo'd SAAB. No difference. Of course, the Tection DID thin to a 30 weight inside of 2k miles.....

I run Rotella-T 5w-40 in my older Land Rover, and it works well for me with winter cold start-ups. No UOA's to support this, just the ability to start at below zero temp's last year, and the teens this year...owner's manual spec's 5w30 or 5w-40 for colder climates though too. I ran 10w-40 dino 3+ years ago in the winter and had trouble once where I could not get the truck started in 15 degree weather. I year round the Rotella and it works.

Yes, please don't take my post the wrong way. If someone sat a gallon of Rotella T Synth 5W40 and a gallon of Rotella dino 15W40 in front of me and said "Pick one." It would be a no brainer to go with the 5W40. I'm just pointing out that while not ideal, I've never noticed detrimental effects. If I could run M1 TDT 5W40 for the rest of my car's life, I would....

I am.......

I'm running Delo 15W40 in '00 E430 right now as rinse phase after running PP 5W20 as clean phase. The recommended grade is M1 0W40. I'll change to Synpower 5W20 in the next couple weeks.
