The 14459 is typically listed for pre-2003 Honda motors and 14610 for 2003+ Honda motors. 14610 is the thinner, longer filter.
What I have noticed is that(and please correct me if I am wrong) Honda dealers carry only one type of filter which is the equivalent of the 14610. They do not have anything that resembles 14459. So if you take a pre-2003 car to the dealer for an oil change then you will get the 14610 type filter.

Any other shop will put a 14459 because thats what is listed in the aftermarket world for the car.

So what would be the correct filter to use ? Do what the dealer does (assuming Honda knows what they are doing) or stick with the original ?

If you're thinking of the PureOne PL14459 it has a better efficiency rating than the PL14610. The PL14459 is 99.9% at 20 microns, while the PL14610 is 99.9% at 40 microns. I'd go with the PL14459 if it fits properly.

The 01 Civic actually specs the 14610, which along with the 5w20 recommendation might have been the first year for that combo. The area dealer used the 14459 (size) until he began to get a supply of the 14610 (size).

I haven't bought a Honda filter from parts in some time. It would seem they should have both the 14610 and the 14459.

As said, in the Purolator the larger 14459 has a better rated efficiency and greater capacity. If that's what your engine specs for that's what you should use. That said, I doubt using the 14610 would cause any issues with your Honda.

I also notice that the relief valve psi for the 14459 is 12-15 psi and the 14610 is 14-18 psi. Not sure if that much difference means anything or not.

Yes to all above as I own said Civic. I remember purchasing the wider/squatter filters from the dealer early on, and then suddenly they changed to the current size of the 14610, which I've been using exclusively ever since.

I got both last night (bosch premium thoe but I beleive the part numbers are similar) Short and fat for my prelude and accord, thin and tall for the rdx.

I also have a couple Wix's and I find the Wix a bit heavier. The Wix I have are built in Mexico and the Bosch are made in usa.

But for the OP, if you want the short and fat one from Honda you will have to ask for the Honda S2000 filter which is (or was don't know haven't picked one up in a while) built by toyo roki.

Different type bypass valve on each. The 14610 has the flat 45rpm disc type bypass, while the 14459 has a plunger type design. You can actually see it extend into the filter by looking down the centertube, like below. Likely accounts for the bypass range difference.

I slightly prefer the older style coil spring ADBV. So has anyone used the 14459 on a late model 2.4 and verified it fits with no issues?

I don't know for sure but the pics off this site of the 2.4L make it look like it could be a tight fit, though you likely have seen the spot. 2.69 vs 3.15 in OD. Doesn't look like it would fit to me but...

On the 01 Civic there are no clearance issues, but the 2.4L that looks like it fits in pocket of sorts. Especially based on the second pic and where the gasket would hit, very doubtful.

from what I have seen, using the old style on the k series motors (well any new motor from honda) is not recommended as it may cause leaks (I think there was a TSB about it).

Any motor before that can handle both types. This includes H, F, B, D series motors.

I could be wrong! but this is what I remember. I know on the RDX the fat one will not fit at all as it's vertically mounted filter with a metal "cage" around it so it will only fit the thin and tall size filter.

It probably means the 14459 is a little better flowing than the 14610, and/or the 14459 can hold more debris before PSID starts to build up. The 14459 has a can volume that is 15% larger, and I'd assume the media area is also at least 15% higher, if not more. An actual media area measurement would have to be done, but I believe the 14610 has ~ 102 sq-in.

The difference in the bypass setting between the two should be transparent to your engine.

I like the coil spring bypass design also. Plus, the 14459 has larger base inlet holes than the 14610. I've started using the 14459 instead of the 14610 on my '04 Altima V6 because of all these factors.

Yeah looks like it would be too tight of a fit. I'll just stay with the 14610 on that application. Thanks.
