Honda A01 vs Pure One 14610

So I had a Fram Ultra on my Accord 2.4 but it was giving me some louder than normal start up noise...I switched it to Pennzoil Ultra and Honda OEM A01 filter. No strange noises and the oil pressure light goes off sooner at start up. Also when I started it up after changing the oil it didnt knock at all like it did with the Fram Ultra, and the oil light went off sooner too. So it seems the Honda A01 filter does have better flow, but im still looking for something with better Filtration specs than Hondas 65% not too impressed with that and i fear that would catch up in the long run. More wear. So im looking into a Pure One 14610 or K$N. I hear the Puro has 99% at 40 microns...is this true? Also ive heard the K$N has a bad time with the ADBV as its nitrile, ive heard of these failing too soon. So Puro, K&N, or Honda oem A01 for next oil change? what do you guys think? also what are the specs for purolator and K$N?

Flow may be more important than filtration. 70% of wear occurs at startup.

Just stick with a factory filter and stop worrying about it...

WOW...you finally stopped the "ticking" and you want to change the filter out that has supposedly stopped it. Use the OEM and your engine will outlast the body of the vehicle.


DONT START THIS UP AGAIN...you asked for all of that info on the FRAM Ultra vs xx and you ended up changing to something else anyway. As you see some of this is trial and error. You found a combo that works and as FZ1 said, most wear occurs at start-up and that is what you were so concerned about. You "fixed it" so pat yourself on the back and have a cold beer.

yes i have fixed on problem...glad the ticking has stopped, but the honda filter will let by twice as many particles as other aftermarket filters...so im looking into filters with better filtration than oem, but also with better flow, such as K&N and pure one...BITOG members seem to have lots of info thats why i turned here.

The Pure One PL14610 is an awesome filter! Use it!!!

The P1 has the textured grip which really really helps. Not to mention it's a really really good filter.

I have been using the P1 14610 on my Honda for the last 4 or 5 oil changes and it's fine. No oil pressure problems or startup noise.

Thats great to hear! anyone with technical info on the P1, im leaning toward it.

I use the P1 on the wife's CR-V. I run it with PU 5-20. I'm happy with the results. She doesn't know the difference, as long as it starts she's happy.

Be aware that the PL14610 is rated for 99.9% at 40 microns (along with PL14612 & the two SAE threaded equivalents for the stated filters) versus 99.9% at 20 microns for the rest of the PureONE line. Or has this changed? I recall a thread several months ago in which somebody stated that a Purolator phone rep said this was no longer true.

If it's no longer true, then it will show on the filter's box.

Someone said the PureOne 14459 had better beta ratio than the 14610.

The 14459 says 99.9% @ 20 microns on the box.

The 14610 says 99.9% @ 40 microns on the box (at least the last ones I saw). If the 14610 is now @ 20 microns, then I'd use it because it has about 25% more media area than the 14459. I've cut both open and measured them both.

I like the excellent filtration capability of the Pure 1 (12222) and have used several of them. But if the van sits more than a day without running I get start up clatter that makes me think the oil is leaking out of the P1 over time. So I am trying some other filters to see if they will make a difference. So far (1 week) it seems to be quieter at startup with the MOPAR filter.

You're putting too much thought into this.Relax and just use the A01.
I've used that filter on the Honda's I've owned.

The 14610 filters are still rated at 40 microns instead of at 20 microns.
