1 year opened bottle

Hi guys,

When doing an oil change on my car, I buy 2x5l Mobil 1 5w30 at wal-mart and I always use 5.7l for the initial fill and always keep the rest in the car for topping off (about 2.5qts per OCI 10k miles). So on my next OC, I bought 2x5l of Mobil 1 5w30 because its cheaper that way but I still have about 2 liters left of the old one.

It has been like that for a year and I'm keeping those 2l here and there. I'm asking your opinion here:

Since those bottles has been opened since a year ago, on the next oil change, would you use let say, 5 liters of the new one and the rest from the old one and keep topping off with the old oil or just recycling it since its no more usable?

If your older oil was capped and stored properly, it's just as good as the new stuff. I'd use it first, then fill with the new oil.

My dad has many half used bottles of oil left open for a year to two years at a time. Never caused a problem.

He does seal them up good and tight before storing them though...

Shake the open bottles and use them up. I have a car that calls for 4.5 qts, sometimes I drop the 5 qts in other times I don't. I've had open qts laying around for well over a year and used them w/o worry.

Yep, as long as it was stored with the cap tight in a cool/dry place, like a basement I would use it without worry for up to 2 years.

it is stored in a heated garage for one part and the others are in a locker where the humidity is, I think, high because it smells humid in there (great to live in a condo).

It's a non issue. Oil doesn't absorb moisture from the air in a plastic bottle.
I still have some 20 plus year old oil left in my stash in unsealed bottles that I use with confidence.

I've got lots of odd-ball lubricants that I've accumulated over the years including what was once a large stash of 20W-50 bought in the 80's for my twin-cam Europa when I drove it a lot.
