I got my '98 Jeep 5.9L with 65k on the ticker back in '01...It had 4k conventional changes from the previous owner. I immediately switched it to M1 silver cap 10w30 on my 1st OC. Since that time, it has always used 3/4 - 1qt of oil every 3k. It has some seepage, but no "significant" leaks. Because I was paranoid, I did 3k OCI with M1 all its life until 150k.
At 150k, I began using Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 and bumped up to 4k OCI for the next few OC's. I retired the beast as a daily driver a year ago and since that time I had not put many miles on it. So I swithced to just one OC per year and reset the OC reminder back to 3k. since I will probably not even drive it that far in a typical year. It has 180k on the ticker now.
But recently, I had to drive it a lot while I fixed my other vehicle. I have put 1600 miles on it since the last OC w/ Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 and upon checking the oil yesterday, I discovered like clock work, it has used just about half a QT of oil. That tells me that it is on track to use about 1qt every 3k just like it always has regardless of the fact I am using Mobil 1 High Mileage in the crank case now. I went ahead & topped it off with no worries, but I have 2 points here.
One being that the motor is not messed up because it has ALWAYS used the same amount of oil since I got it.
Two being that I was under the impression that Mobil 1 High Mileage "might" burn-off at a slower rate than regular silver cap M1 does. What I have learned is that they seem to burn-off at the same rate...
Many folks online have always reported excessive burn-off with Mobil 1 as opposed to other brands/types of oil in an otherwise healthy motor. I never took the time to compare the HM formula, but now that I have had the chance to see it for sure, my next test will be to try a HM conventional oil and see if it yields the same results.
