0w20 in the States, 5w30 everywhere else.

But curious minds still want to know. As you can see below, I'm running a 30 in ours. And our Honda is still under warranty.

Use four quarts of Mobil 1 0W-20 for the receipt/warranty tracking, and sneak an undocumented quart of Mobil 1 0W-40 in there. It'll be on the border of a 20/30 grade, and will still have very good cold start properties.

Nothing wrong with that!

+1 on the sneaky beef-up blend; did this in the 09 EJ forester. But as we shiver in the corner waiting for the dealer to deny our powertrain warranty - has anyone ever had warranty work "denied" for using one grade thicker proper service category oil? I Don't recall reading this happening anywhere. If the oil is relatively "clean" and mostly present in the sump and you have decent OCI records, I dont think they care, or, KNOW enough to care. Whaddya think?

I agree BUT...if under warranty you'll need records. So either you need to be straight up and be prepared for some discussion, or take the sneaky route which to me is an integrity issue so....

Most likely records that show the oil was changed in a timely manner is going to be more than enough, because the liklihood of any issues actually being oil related are very very small. JMO. But I'm still running thick 20's in our KIA.

That's probably the most rigorous test 20 grades have been put through yet. If the engine survives ARCO, use whatever oil and grade he's using.

Take, for instance, the 2012 Prius C. A forum participant from Singapore related the following allowable oil weights for a unit that forcefully requires 0w-20 in the US for all temps.

0w-20 (below -20F to above 100F)
5w-20 (below -20F to above 100F)
5w30 (below -20F to above 100F)
10w-30 (0F to above 100F)
15w-40 (10F to above 100F)
20w-50 (20F to above 100F)

The only caveats were to use an energy conserving oil in the 20w & 30w, and that there may be difficulties in engine starting during cold starts with a 10w30 or above.

I hear ya on the integrity issue, but given a chance the dealer will screw the eyes out of your head, or at least try. I know that doesn't make it right, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Odds are you'll never have a problem. I'd worry about ethics if and when the time comes, and take the path you think is right, at that time if it is even an issue.

They may not have the EPA / CAFE requirements that we have.

They may not have the grades available we have.

Oil companies can ship 30 and 40 grade oils to every corner of the world, but not 20?

Different animal, but I use 5w30 in my son's RX8 even though 5W-20 is the factory recommendation.

I believe that the heavier oil gives the rotary a little extra protection. At least that helps me sleep at night.
