0w-50 options

It would probably require too many VIIs and hence degrade the quality of the basestocks.

There are some 5w50s out there though. Mobil 1, Maxima.

There isn't a whole lot of demand for such wide viscosity spread. 0w-50 will have a ton of VIIs in it to achieve this viscosity spread, and we all know that breaking down VIIs aren't particularly good to your engine. It'll quickly shear to a 40-grade, in which case, why not just run a good 0w-40 or 5w-40 oil instead?

I ask because I was intrigued when I was looking at my old man's new snowmobile. I had never before seen a engine that speced 0w-50 before. I'm sure that the manufacturer has a 0w-50 oil that you are supposed to use but I was wondering if there were any other options.

Oh, a snowmobile. Hrm... interesting. Must need a very thick oil to deal with consistent high revs, but being a snowmobile, all your starts will be very cold ones. Hence, 0w-50. Honestly, I would assume that a 0w-50 oil would be expensive and hard to come by. What manufacturer is this?

If you engine needs a 0w-50 you dont want a 0w-50 or a 0w-40 for that matter - you want a pan or sump heater

Making the oil a 0w-50 will just make it a highly compromised oil - tough it may get you through a season of sledding! Anyhow 0W to 5W is just a 5 deg drop in the cloud/gellation point inflection point or the cold pump limit of 60K cP. Some do much better at 15-10K. You poor north polar bears out in -40 or worse ... I'm getting chilly at 40F!

That's the thing. I am quite sure that this engine needs the 0w-50. Being that it makes 165hp on a 750cc motor. that 220hp/liter. The machine will see (and already has seen) northern Ontario and quebec where -40 is very common.

In terms of shearing, the OCI for this machine would be roughly 2500-3000 miles. will it shear that quickly?

Because then it'll just shear down to a 30wt. But then you can just get a 0w-30 and have it shear down to a 20wt. Or better yet just get a 0w-20 and be done with it.

I think Polaris has a very strange 2w-50 oil. That's what they recommend for the ATV I ride. I just used Castrol Syntec 5w-50. Works fine.
