0w 40 Mobil 1 in 65 Mustang

I've used Mobil 1 15w-50 & Mobil 1 oil filters exclusively in my vintage cars over the past 15 years. These include several '65, '66, and '67 Mustangs, two '66 Shelby GT-350's, Triumph TR-4s, Jaguar XKE, etc.

Just on my current '66 GT-350 I've logged 45,000 miles over the past 10 years. No leaks and no measurable wear, I have 35 lbs of hot oil pressure at idle and 70 lbs. of oil pressure at any rpm above 3,500

Get ready to hear how bad that is, as the oil pressure bypass relief is opening and directing flow back into the pan... No it won't be from me, as I've ran engines in the same mode for over 40 years and am yet to have a bearing failure...

not only do I not have any bearing failure, I have zero bearing wear, zero piston & cylinder wear. Remember this engine has ben set up this way for 10 years/45,000 miles. My oil pressure bypass relief valve is set to not open at any pressure under 100 psi, well over my desired operating pressure. I have a Melling HV blue-printed oil pump. I routinely run my car at redline for extended periods. No lubrication issues.

problems ? certainly you must mean marital problems, Because It would be laughable if you are suggesting using synthetic oil in older engines can cause engine problems.

That's what I always thought...

I worked closely with Exxon Mobil for 3 years and they have always warned that seals in older engines (pre 80's) are not compatible with synthetics while always recognizing in newer engines that leaks are not caused by synthetics but most likely due to an engine that more or less needs repair work.


Castrol says it wont affect older seals at all as long as the seals are in good condition. I ran synthetic in my 1970 Nova with the original motor and had no leak issues and I am currently running it in my 86 Monte Carlo SS with no issue either.

If Castrol will guarantee that the seals or any engine components wont weep or leak and will repair any weeps or leaks free of all costs in writing then OK.

Otherwise don't risk it, stick with oils that are made to ensure the integrity of the engine that it was designed and it will not compromise it any way.

I am no longer a risk taker. Its cheaper and more economical and in the best interests of your engine.
 
So far this Winter, I have driven over 4000 miles on the Mobil 1 0w40. The oil is still golden and the engine has started each and every morning. The temps have ranged from 6 above to about 28 when I start the 318 Mopar engine. No oil usage yet. Will run to Spring or 7K which ever comes first.
 
Please correct me but I always thought that the PAO's were the 'culprits' with leaking seals. Since most synthetics are Hyrocracked now, I thought that there was no longer any issue with seals. There is a possibility that only the crud on the seal is keeping it from leaking and a good synthetic could clean away the 'crud'.
