0W-20 vs 5W-20

In my 2010 Hyundai turbo it restricts the turbo boost and the valve timing until the oil temp is 140F. The 2013s they bumped the temp up to 160F.

As I understand it this is for the oil controlled cam timing adjusters. But the recommended range of oil grades is 5w20 to 5w40

Yet countries like Norway with much colder temps than much of the continental US seem to run 30w without any such trouble.
All you hear is "we are not in Europe, we re in the US" which is all well and good but you would think they would at least wonder why.


NAF (Norwegian Automobile Federation, equivalent to Germanys ADAC) hasn't recorded a single engine problem with the Prius since it was introduced in 2000. Prius are very popular among taxi companies/owners.


Its pretty cold in Norway during the winter. Seems those cars are running just fine on 30 grade oil. I don't think the life expectancy is shorter either. Maybe the gas mileage is a little less, but cold winters tend to cause that, and other problems too. Makes you wonder doesn't it?

I'm a Puro guy that's for sure lol (decent quality and price). Mobil 1-110 is being used now because it was part of the Pep Boys special last month (5 qts + Mobil 1 filter for $29.99) and also because this filter would be a good candidate for 2 OCIs.

Temperatures here compare to that of U.S. state of Maine. In the southern part (and coast), temperature seldom drop belov -10C, but other parts are much colder (mountain ranges and north).

Thanks, what are the temps in the mountain ranges and northern parts of the country?

I think you are right... and I confirmed it in at least one case.

I have a 5.4L Ford V8 with VVT. I was considering carefully a viscosity change to a thicker oil. I wasn't doing it because I'm a "thick oil guy" but for other reasons I won't go into now. My big research stumbling block was to determine the precise effect on the VVT, as that is one of the cautions most often presented. I couldn't get that question answered by anyone, so I answered it myself. Since I have a programmer with a datalogging capability, I datalogged cold starts and normal running with 5W20 and then with the 10W30 I installed later.

Bottom line, I couldn't tell the readouts apart but for a couple of very tiny data point differences here and there ... eg normal noise. In the case of my Ford, the VVT doesn't begin to operate until the oil temp has reached a certain level anyway. I concluded the change in viscosity from a 5W20 syn to a 10W30 HDEO mineral had virtually no effect on VVT operation I could see. I've been running the 10w30 oil now for 19 months and about 12K miles. I usually have the cam timing PID up on the screen of the programmer, mainly because I discovered it was a great way to observe engine load and drive more economically (cam timing stays advanced= light load) and I haven't observed any glitchy behavior vs when I had 5W20.

I can't speak to the other VVT engines out there. Perhaps some might not react well to visc changes. Ultimately, it's up to the owners to determine, as I did, the efficacy of a change, either by research or direct observation of whatever instrumentation can be brought to bear.

The coastline has a span of 13 degrees of latitude...
Northern and mountain ranges has mean monthly temperatures around -15 °C during winter.
Lowest temperature ever measured in Norway is -51,4 °C. The highest temperature ever registered during winter, is 18,9 °C (February).

To get to the root of the OP's question, I think it is as simple as Toyota trying to ensure that synthetic is used. Almost all 0W-20s are syn; there are many conventional 5W-20s. 10,000 miles for syn; 5,000 for conventional.

Yes that's what I think too...it's the easiest way for them to ensure synthetics are used.

I'm part of a hemi forum and I've learned that the cylinder deactivation is done with oil keeping the intake valves closed on the deactivated cylinders.
There is a member there who pushes the 5w-20 on everyone claiming the cylinders won't deactivate properly blah blah blah so one member did as you have and datalogged using 5w40.
Turns out that the cylinder shut down was unaffected,since it too is controlled once oil reaches the right temp which at highways speeds is mere moments.
I've also heard the vvt whine in the mustang forums claiming thicker oil affects it however in the real world the difference is imperceptible.
I saw a post the other day that I think should be the quote of the year. It went something like "engines are designed to run on a variety of oils and manufacturers spec whatever is readily available in each market"
I think that statement is closer to fact than I know.

The temp limit is to protect the engine, not because the oil is too viscous to operate the VVT.

Maybe that was their original intent, but there are a number of 0w20 oils on the market that are non-synthetic and may not be suitable for extended drains - Valvoline Maxlife 0w20, Honda syn-blend 0w20, 76 0w20 and Durablend 0w20.
 
You all keep saying this has been beaten to death. Yes the 20W debate has been but not my question.

Clearly there is still a huge debate on this topic and none of the previous posts answer my question.

Why is Toyota so dead set on 0W-20 only, why can't I run 5W-20 without them freaking out.

There has to be some technical reason or they would not make such a big issues.

So what is the technical reason? Is it the VVT?

I could care less what oil is better, all I want to know I why technically, not emotionally they keep telling me I can't run the stock pile of 5W-20XL in my garage in my 2012 FJ.

If you look at the lubematch I posted (Shell, Castrol and Mobil, Europe and most of the world, except US/Canada), for the exact same engine Toyota recommends 5w30.
VVT is clearly not the reason for 0W-20 recommendation in the US.

Hey, I started my car outside after many hours in -26 C today with conventional 5w30. It and I survived.
