interesting thing about 0w-20 oils that they are not all equal. Volvo spec has higher 100C viscosity when compared to Dexos or other brand specs.
examples of differences between Volvo spec oils just Visc @100C:
SynPower FE 0w-20 - 9.2
Rowe RSV 0w-20 - 9.0 (HC oil)
Ravenol EFS 0w20 - 8.3 (PAO)
Motul spec RBS0-2AE - 8.8 (HC oil)
LM V spec 0w-20 - 8.8 (HC oil)
other oils
HPL Euro 0w-20 - 8.5
HPL Premium 0w-20 - 8.67
Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 - 8.3
Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0w20 - 8.3
Majority of current ACEA Longlife spec or European cars approval are group iii or iv oil because it must hold up to 20k miles/2y OCI.
I found Volvo spec oil is usually ~15% cheaper than VW 508 509 spec oil from the same brand. I am not sure if it is something to do with licensing cost or different level of stringent tests needed. Check Castrol, Ravenol (VSE vs EFS) websites who have them.
@a2gtinut There is specific Dexos, for ACEA oil. DexosD has similar standard as Volvo. Not Dexos1, which is only for gasoline engine.
I think all ESP European ACEA specs passanger car Oil are suitable for light duty diesel and gasoline. It is just how the market there populated with almost equal number of diesel and gasoline cars in the past.
From this reason, the european spec oil should be able to handle soot and longer interval than most API SP oil.
