Car is a 93 Ford Escort GT with the 1.8 DOHC mazda BP engine found in the Protege of the same years.

MPG is the name of the game for this car. I have been running Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w-20 for a while now but my local Walmart stopped carying it. I have also been running a larger Fram Extra Guard Oil Filter for the 2.5 liter Probe GT.

It burns a quart of oil every 10k miles so I don't plan on changing too much.

I was thinking of going with Mag Oil since it is just under $30 at Amazon for 6 quarts of 0w-20 where it was over $41 for 6 quarts of M1 at Walmart + Tax.

I'd like to know if you think Mag1 could handle the 10-12k OCI.

I like that it's viscosity is a little thinner than the M1 at 40 and 100C so more gas mileage.

However, I am worried about going a little thinner on 130 mile per day highway round trips. Reliability is also in mind besides gas mileage...the Escort has proven very reliable and don't want to change that!

Any thoughts on the oil filter? Is there anything cheaper than can do the same 10k OCI?

Thank you!

Fuel economy correlates with HTHSV.
We don't know the HTHSV spec' of Mag 1 but it is likely the minimum 2.6cP so it will be somewhat lighter in it's virgin state to M1 0W-20. I don't know what the TBN is of Mag 1 but I wouldn't go 10K without a UOA at 7-8K just see how it's doing.

There a lot of 0W-20 oils available now, everyone has one including the excellent Idemitsu made Mazda 0W-20.
And of course there is the excellent class leading Mobil made Toyota 0W-20 which can often be had for under 6 bucks/qt and it will go 10K.
Pennzoil has a 0W-20 but not everyone carries it but PP 5W-20 with it's 169 VI is likely as light as most 0W-20's which tend to have VI's clustered around 170. If it's can be had cheaply I'd probabily choose it over Mag 1.

Fissker, a member here at BITOG uses M1 0-20 in his mid 90s Escort and runs his OCI out to 15-20K. The engine has 300+K on it with no oil related problems. Even if you have to pay the $6.50 a qt price for M1 0-20 at WM, the price is still reasonable for such a quality proven oil in these type of Ford engines.

Thanks for your thoughts but there is now more at play....

1) My Walmart no longer stocks 0w-20 oil.
2) The 0w-20 oil is not M1 EP but rather Advanced Fuel Economy.
3) My mid 90's escort is a Mazda engine and even though they are known for their reliability I am not sure if they are THAT reliable like Fissker's.
4) Still need to know what oil filters are good for the buck....although you mention even longer oil filter changes with I like and I noticed the Fram Ultra filters that Walmart stocks for $8.97 (not sure what happened to the Extended Guard)...although that is a good sign if my oil filter changes are getting so long I am not in the oil section much anymore

Fram Ultra.....a best buy at Walmart for $8.97.
PureOne Synthetic
Bosch Distance Plus

or...something a little cheaper, but an excellent filter
