Guys my wife has a new 08 Civic. How does the OCI work. Is it reliable to go by ??? Ive always been a mileage ( 3000 ) guy . Sadly. It's hard to break. But want to at least go 5,000 on her OCI . Whats the average OCI been with this set up ?? Anyone know ??? Thanks for any info and advise, WarDawg

lots of discussion on this, please use the search function to look up details and experiences with the OLM.

Thanks,

JMH

I don't know what the average is, but it's an algorithm that takes into account ambient temperatures, RPMs, etc. and it's supposedly pretty accurate.

Just follow the olm, use a good oil and that honda will run forever :)

The 'when' in terms of miles/km, depends on many factors, as mentioned above. If the olm still hasn't told you to change your oil by 10k, change it and reset

I got MMS too and my first OCI was right at 5k. I would say my average with lots of city driving is 5k but I drive a lot everyday(more then 2, 3 maybe 4 or 5 different commutes). Be aware though that those that drive less like to and from work and then not much else tend to have longer OCIs from what I have observed especially if that commute involves a lot of linear freeway driving. I would definitely go with it but know that a lot of people lose patience because they don't accept their conservative driving style or lack of driving period because they have eazy work commutes and not much else until the weekends perhaps and thus they have long MMS drain intervals (5,7 maybe even 8000 mile OCIs) but for some strangein-explicable reason, they want to change their oil early(and defeat the MMS) because they don't have the patience and the silly urge to swap out good-for-your-engine Factory Fill is somehow too great when the opposite should be true: they should accept the 'reward' of being able to leave the FF in longer due to less engine use + engine temps because the MMS goes on amount of engine revolutions + engine temp and freeway driving or less driving tends to bring those numbers down and thus leave you with longer then 5k OCIS. Forget 3k altogether, unless you do racing or lots of heavy towing, that's outdated thinking.

In city driving, my 5-speed manual '06 Civic LX sedan the the OLM clicks off 10% every 630 miles or so. Did my last oil change with close to 5700 miles on the oil, the OLM had just clicked over to 15%.

On an extended highway vacation trip (7,145 miles in 28 days) the OLM clicked off 10% every 800 miles. I did the entire trip on a fresh oil change, running 5w-20 Havoline dino/NAPA Gold filter right after dumping the factory fill at 5K miles. The OLM had just clicked over to 10% when I returned home. As a side note, the Civic averaged 41 MPG for the entire trip.

I was running the Havoline dino until my last oil change (23K total miles on the car), have now switched to Mobil 1 0w-20 synthetic.

My OLM uses 10% oil life every 1100 miles. So my OCI is around 10k; I drive alot of highway miles so the engine is very easy on the oil.

Because of this OCI I'm running Mobil 1 5W-20. I wouldn't go this far on a dino however and this is what Honda recommends.
