Well, getting the car soon. Takes 5-20, so I am thinking Syntec or M1. Suggestions as to what I should go with?

Thanks!

Motorcraft 5w20 Blend if you can get a good price on it. Apparantly also sold under the Conoco name in the US. In my view not worth using a synthetic in the 5w20 grade.

I was thinking about using Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 in my Elantras. Hyundai's factory fill for the Sonata is Quaker State synthetic. I asked one of the guys here that used to work for Pennzoil, he told me that he likes the additive package for the Pennzoil better. Pennzoil, Quaker State and Shell are owned by SOPUS. You have to change your oil every 3mos to keep your warranty with Hyundai, I think you'll save a little bit if you go with the Pennz, Pepboys sells it for $1.99 with rebate a least once a month if not more often.
From everything I hear on this site M1 and Syntec are great products. You wouldn't go wrong with any of these.

PepBoys also offers QS syn along with the Pennzoil Platinum for $1.99, and I think there may be little difference between the two.

Or if you are stuck on a synthetic (which I'm not sure is necessary in the 5w20 grade), then try the Pennzoil Platinum 0w20. Also said to be a PAO, group IV.

My fiance just bought one a couple weeks ago. I looked at the manual and it calls for 5w20 with OCIs of 7500 miles (less if severe use). How they can determine you are in "severe" use is beyond me. Maybe if you lived in the north pole or the Gobbi desert perhaps, but unless you tow or do a lot of short trips I would not worry about it. They show in the manual the QS sign for oil although I am not sure if the factory fill is QS synthetic or not. The OCIs recommended in the manual are for dino.

I would use Havoline 5w20 dino twice a year or every 5000 miles. Keep receipts and use the filter provided by the dealer (they are hard to find aftermarket and the dealer filters are suppose to be good quality). If you want to use synthetic oil fine, but chances are you would not need it in this engine. "Severe" service notwithstanding, I would not sweat it.

Actually if the Sonata is anything like the Mazda requirements to qualify for the normal service intervals, very few drivers would ever qualify. They have a long list of items, with any one of them dumping you into the severe service classification.

You got any proof of that?

Total Nonsense.

I agree.

You sure he wasn't talking about before the 2005 deadline when they switched over to Grp 3?

No, if you follow through the whole thread, he is saying as I understand it, that 0w20 is still PAO and there is no critical date. So much for the value of selling my stash on E-bay!

Any thoughts on Extended Perfomance 5-30 instead?

If you are talking about M1 EP, do you not find it kind of expensive? I was at Canadian tire today and it was $10.50 a litre. Valvoline Synpower was $7.99. Unfortunately oil is expensive in Canada. Probably a good oil though, but not sure why one would want to leave the same oil in for 20,000 K.
