Ok, Here is the info..

(for you Patman!)

2005 Toyota Corolla 5sp manual. I'd say 85% HWY /15% City with the city being less than 5 miles one way. 70,800 miles total on car.

5,800 miles and pretty much a solid month of temps both day and night below freezing and many single digits or below starts while at work.

No FP, No LC, Normal whatever reg gas is the cheapest (as long as its sold at a place that moves alot of gas).

2900-3000 RPM on the freeway (70-75mph) and since the snow tires were on, around 40-41 mpg.

Another ho-hum healthy Toyota UOA. Kudos for using GTX. Those "sludge sloshing" TV commercials are so funny, I may reward them by running a fill of the stuff myself.

Seriously, great result. Hard to argue with this. One question, I guess, would be where did the Manganese come from?
cheers.gif

Nice report. Shows how well todays current SM GF4 conventional oil does. 5800 miles and plenty of life left under sloppy winter conditions.

Knowing you Bill, this oil was probably on sale.

ekpolk,

It is my understanding that manganese is a fuel additive, and likely goes along with the trace of fuel in the oil.

Very nice Bill! For an oil which many keep saying has a weak add pack, it sure does a great job! Nice strong TBN still too!

Thanks Bill!

Pat, your welcome. So, no adds (LC, FP, slob, etc) and almost 6k miles has a 4.4 TBN.

This is after being run durning the cold part of the year and in a timing chain 1ZZFE 4 cyl motor.

I will say that I do start the car, wait no more than 30 secs and drive away. Even in the sub zero starts. I have a scan guage and if I idle for 5 mins, the water temp is up to 80 degrees. (this is at 0 degrees). The next day (2 above) I started it up and after 30 sec, drove away and shifted around 2k (the fast idle is 1500-1700 rpm) and in 5 mins I was up to 129 degrees... (this test became my daughters science paper

)

So much for idleing..

The question is, how long would you guys think I could go with this oil before being concerned?

It also proves my point about todays oils being dang good. More than we need! If you were changing this out at 3k, WOW, what a waste.

Love FACTS..

Yes, Bill's UOA's and posts were the key contributors to my newfound confidence in dino oil. His UOA's are very persuasive. Thanks to Bill, I've got my first UOA coming up soon on regular old yellow bottle PZ 5w-20 on my wife's Acura coming up soon. Before that, it was all synthetic since 4k after brand new.

Oh yeah, and thanks to BITOG, I spent a good portion of last summer's road trip south of the border in home depot's looking for deals on PZ.....scored 24 qts of PZ 5w-20 for $0.98 a piece in Missoula, MT. I hope the Acura likes it.

Bill, based on this report I see no reason why you couldn't go 8000 miles on this oil in the wintertime, and probably even more in the summer!

So even 5k oil changes seem like a waste given the condition of this oil when you're done with it!

Does Toyota call for 5k oil changes now?

I would say you should be good for the standard "Japanese" OCI which is 7500 miles.

(I am talking about Japanese vehicle mfg's)

The recommended OCI is 5000 miles or 6months.

I'll continue with 5k OCIs.

When its costing me under $5 for a oil change incl filter, I'll spurge!

But agree, with a 4.4TBN @ 5.8k miles, I would think 7500 miles with ease. Prob closer to 9k.

Take care, bill

Looks great Bill.

I must be missing all the sales, i've never seen any oil for 69 cents a quart..

49 cent chevron.

All the oil I have in my stash (well over 300 quarts) were bought under a buck. Most 49, 59 and 69 cents per quart for name brand.

Timing chain, bucket tappets, wintertime, 4.4TBN... I think "weak ad pack" needs to be (re)defined.

Thanks Bill in Utah! Perhaps you should rename your handle to "MythBuster" or something.

Ha, too bad I don't have any of those stores near me.

Oil never goes on sale in new york (so it seems).

I will keep my eyes peeled.

Thanks.

Nice results Bill. I'm curious if the post in March of 2005 is with Pennzoil or Castrol? Other than a slight increase in moly the non wear related data look identical. If it is in fact Pennzoil back in 05, it's interesting to see Pennzoil and Castrol looking so similar these days.

The base number and minor dip in viscosity makes me feel much more confident about the 5w30 GTX thats in my mazda right now.

Thanks for sharing your information!

It was Castrol Syntec and Syntec blend (50/50%) back in march 05.

Hey, I feel if I'm going to be here and speak out, I'd better have done the work.

Goose, Are you staying with the Trix for now?

Yeah, your getting up there too. Luckly for us we own cars that can last!
thumbsup.gif

To tell you the truth, I was expecting the TBN to be around in the low 2s or high ones since the 5800 miles and so much operation in the cold..

4.4 is really great!

Take care, Bill
