VEHICLE-----------------05 Toyota Tacoma, 4.0L, 6 cylinder, 4WD, AT OIL---------------------Amsoil SSO 0w-30, older API SM formula OIL ADDITIVE------------4 ounces Schaefers #132 Moly EP & 5oz LC20 initially & 3 oz LC20 total between oil changes. Added 4oz Steel Shield EPA apprx 400mi/4mos prior to oil sample MAKE UP OIL--------------none ENGINE OIL CAPACITY------5.5 quarts OIL FILTER----------------Amsoil EAO57 (new #=EA15K51) AIR FILTER----------------Amsoil EAA (100,00mi/4yr warranty, installed 5/9/08 at 24,011mi, cleaned at 35,144 miles) MILES ON OIL/FILTER---------5,380 TIME ON OIL/FILTER---------2yr, 5+ months (apprx 1yr, + 5+ months too long) MILES ON VEHICLE----------45,393 UOA by BLACKSTONE LABORATORIES LAB COMMENTS: "...It's been several years since you sent a sample from your Tacoma, but things still look pretty good for your 1GR-FE engine. Most wear metals read at or below average, with the exception of iron. It's from steel parts and was just a little higher than average, but still not high enough to show a problem. It could be from some city driving, idling, or maybe towing or hauling heavy loads. The only mark we had was the low flashpoint, which shows 0.8% fuel in this sample. That's a harmless amount, so it's not a serious concern either. All in all, this is a good report." WEAR METALS in PPM: iron------------------16 chromium-------------0 nickel-----------------0 aluminum-------------3 copper----------------3 lead-------------------1 tin--------------------0 cadmium--------------n/a silver------------------0 vanadium-------------n/a CONTAMINANT METALS: silicon-----------------18 sodium----------------7 potassium-------------3 MULTI-SOURCE METALS: titanium--------------0 molybdenum----------3 Antimony-------------n/a Manganese------------0 Lithium---------------n/a boron----------------7 ADDITIVE METALS: magnesium------------15 calcium----------------3239 barium-----------------0 phosphorus-------------640 zinc--------------------675 fuel %------------------0.8% antifreeze%-------------0.0% Water------------------0.0% insolubles%-------------0.3% SUS [email protected] cSt [email protected] flashpoint---------------370F TAN--------------------n/a TBN--------------------n/a oxidation----------------n/a nitration-----------------n/a LUBE CHANGE-----------yes, 4:1 ratio Amsoil ATM10W-30/ASM 0W-20 + 4oz Schaefers #132 Moly EP, 4oz LC20, 5.5oz Steel Shield EPA. Installed magnetic drain plug. LUBE FILTER CHANGE--------yes (AMSOIL EAO57, Donaldson P169071 o/s diameter slightly too large) AIR FILTER CHANGE---------yes, new Amsoil EAA, which has been discontinued. Old filter seal deformed one end from previous poor install/re-install. Also, o/s rubber seal beginning to crumble & crack one side. NOTES/COMMENTS: Iron is about 3 times higher than I'd prefer. Silicon, IMO, should be substantially lower. Hopefully, the new air filter & shorter OCI intervals will solve these issues. Denso long life Iridium plugs. WM Murphy USA premium gas w/FP+ added. Aprx 65/35 highway/city driving using mostly feather foot, hypermiling for 24-25mpg. Mostly short 11 mile trips once/week--sits unused apprx 6 days/week. Vehicle parked in o/s FL weather. 20-30sec warmup time, lately longer. Occasional light towing. Approx 7 beach days/stays in this OCI. Limit future oil change intervals to 1 year. I assume the fuel dilution is due to having used truck only to pull a couple stuck vehicles from yard on 2 separate occasions w/no miles driven, just prior to oil sample. And, I reckon I must be an additive/experimentation addict. PREVIOUS UOA’s: posted here in previous years. Search feature hasn’t been working for me lately back past 1yr.

LOL Me too. The problem here is each company will blame the other for the "just a little higher than average" iron. Which is probably nothing to be concerned about anyway. Maybe the LC20 did a bit of cleaning and freed up some iron that might have been lingering in some mild deposit/deposits somewhere.

First thing I'd like to say is, I like your signature. That is cool. Now about the UOA. I'm not a lubrication engineer, But why do you put all them additives in? Amsoil makes pretty good stuff. I would stay away from the extra ingredients. It's like me adding more seasoning to moms sauce. It just ain't good. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. Amsoil makes good oil & it needs no additives, but "..I reckon I must be an additive/experimentation addict."

You do indeed like the additives, although I imagine you could get similar UOA results with a plain fill of PYB 5w-30 and a Purolator Classic. Here is my UOA for comparison. 2008 Tacoma 4.0 with a 50/50 fill of M1 0w-30 AFE and Rotella T6. There were regular (and sometimes extreme down to -30F) cold starts during this time.

Where's the moly in Amsoil SSO 0w-30, API SM? I don't know. Was there an API SL formula with less moly? Maybe this oil is older than I thought. A previous Blackstone Lab VOA (sample date 7/15/08) of SSO, I saved from here, showed only 2 PPM moly. MY PREVIOUS UOA, with SSO, from Oil Analyzers showed 4 PPM of moly. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubb...rue#Post2349959 MY PREVIOUS UOA, with SSO, AUGUST 2011 vehicle-----------------05 Toyota Tacoma, 4.0L, 6 cyl OIL--------------------Amsoil SSO 0w-30 oil additive-------------3 ounces Auto-RX initially & 5.5 oz LC20 between miles 30,471 & 37,851 Make up oil-------------added & removed 16 ounces between miles 31,894 & 35,144 (dipstick read issue) Engine oil capacity---5.5 quarts oil filter----------------Amsoil EAO57 (Amsoil replaced with EAO51, now with 15,000mi/1yr recommended change interval) air filter----------------Amsoil EAA (100,00mi/4yr warranty, installed 5/9/08 at 24,011mi, cleaned at 35,144 miles) miles on oil------------ 15,861 (apprx 3 years, 3 months--5/9/2008 thru 8/10/2011) Miles on filter---------25,098 (64 months---5yr,4mo) miles on vehicle--------39,872 UOA by Oil Analyzers: LAB COMMENTS: Infrared results indicate OXIDATION is SEVERELY HIGH; Total Base Number is SIGNIFICANTLY LOW; Change oil and filters if not done when oil sample was taken.
