04 Accord Automatic Trans Filter?

I'm told, and I've read that the new generation Accords (03 & up) have external transmission filters, vs. the older models that had only an internal filter. Anybody out there actually change this trans filter yet?

I did a quick phone survey of 3 local dealers, just asking about transmission service for this vehicle. When quoted a price, I specifically asked about a filter, and 3 out of 3 said "no filter on Honda's", drain & refill only".

A simple internet search of a parts fische for this model shows the filter, but knowledge of it has been slow to leak out.

Geneally Honda auto transmissions don't have a drain pan. The ATF is changed just by draining from the transmission itself. I talked to a transmission specialist and was told thay Honda auto transmissions only have an internal filter that is changed only during a transmission tare down and rebuild.

Newer Accords (at least the 2.4 4 cylinder model I'm working on) does have an extenal filter. Doesn't seem to be much experience out there on these - I will report my findings next week when I change the filter.

The odyclub.com guys discovered a filter on their 5-spd transaxles. Check the Odyclub.com DIY Maint section, there's more info about it. If I recall correctly, its an inline located close to the heat exchanger, not sure though.

My 2005 CR-V has one. It is located directly below the radiator, sort of in the middle. Black little "can" with a black clamp holding it and two black hoses (one going in, one out) attached.
My Honda dealer didn't know anything about it until I showed him a schematic in his own shop manual!
Anyway, my plan is to change this filter at 30,000 miles - the same time I flush the ATF. By the way, Honda doesn't recommend flushes for their newer auto's. But I don't trust Honda's motives in this regard anymore than I trust the "Honda Certified" mechanics at the dealership.

Sure sounds like a Magnefine.

Gary, I agree that it sounds (and looks) like a Magnefine, but this is factory equipment. As Olefam pointed out, Honda dealers will swear to you there is not a filter, but if you get one to look in the book, or fische, it IS there, at least on later models. No idea why this is not listed as a maintenance item in the owners manual.

I agree it sounds like a Manefine unit. I WISH it were a Magnefine as they are outstanding little filters. Price for an oem Honda and the Magnefine are virtually identical, so when I change mine out I may use the Mag. unit. The only concern I have is voiding the warranty - which Honda sounds all too willing to do when you speak to Honda America.
As much as I like the CR-V as my wife's daily driver, I am so disappointed in Honda's attitude that only their proprietary fluids and parts are acceptable, that this may be my first and last Honda product.
Mazda Never treated me this poorly. And though Nissan isn't great, they are better than Honda when it comes to assisting customers with non-Nissan parts.
Actually, I've had such great service with my 15 year old Corvette that I'm strongly tempted to look at Chevy the next time I buy a new vehicle.

I am using the aftermarket Magnefine filter, one on the Auto Trans., and one on the PS return line of my 2001 CR-V. They've been on for the last 3 months. I figured, they will only help my venerable Honda Auto transmission as there is no serviceable filter installed by Honda on my CR-V. So far so good, nothing special to report.

Will replace the transmission filter after about 10K kms and thereafter every 30K kms or 1 year and will then know if they helped in any way.
