Honda guru guy is telling me that the Honda oil filters are the way to go and that after market ones don't seal properly. I am generally a wix/N Gold guy.
Whatta ya think?

Thanks.

Bogus, Since most Hondas probably don't get a Honda filter after it leaves the dealership, and they are not commonly on the roadside with a puddle of oil under them, I think his view is pretty bogus.

The "aftermarket" filter makers are likely the same filter makers who make the Honda filter you get at the parts counter.

I've had a Wix 51356 on my 2004 Honda element 4-cyl for over three months now. No gasket leaks, runs fine, sounds fine, etc etc...

Definitely bogus, but having run both Honda and Wix filters on mine, I will say that the "o-ring" style gasket on the Honda A0-1 OEM filter is pretty nice. You tighten the filter until the o-ring crushes and it won't go any tighter. Basically it just stops turning instead of getting progressively harder to turn.

Not that the "normal" gaskets make the filter difficult to put on or anything of course. Very minor issue but I like it.

I'd just get whichever one you can get easier. To get the Honda filters for a decent price you'll probably have to order them online. At my dealer they really gouge you for them.

at the dealership i work at we stopped using honda filters due to the high amount of leaks we got from them, the gaskets on the honda filters can get bunched up and fold over on themselves. also most honda filters are made by honeywell aka fram so i'd keep using those wix.

Well, that's just proved my points over and over again that the internet is filled w/ all sorts of garbage, and armchair scientists would claimed to be somebody on all kinds of bulletin boards simply because of the lack of accountability.

Honda guru? Better have him checked in and we'll wipe his knowledge/status off like I double-wiped all my hard drives before sending it over for shredding.

Q.

Honda guru should be asking himself who makes those Honda filters.

Oh! It's those same guys who make the OCOD!

I've had my Microgard filter in for almost seven months. No leaks, no nothing. Haven't used a Honda filter since Honeywell started making them.

Yep, another vote for bogus. Having owned 3 three Honda's over the years and currently servicing two, one an 01 Civic with ~145k, except for some dealer OC's early on all have used aftermarket filters with flat gaskets, with no issues.

Just finshed a 1 year OCI with a Pure One on a 3.0L Accord and replaced with same. The Civic currently has a Puro Classic after using an Advance Total Grip, all flat gasket. A little oil on the gasket to lubricate as standard practice, and you're good to go.

Some do prefer the P type gasket of Honda OE's (A-01,A-02) but that factor is not worth paying extra for or being a deciding factor, IMO.

So keep using the Wix/NG if you choose with confidence. And, grain of salt with that "guru's" future Honda recommendations.

I've used both OEM and WIX on my two Elements and they both work just fine. If anyone has any OEM Honda filters and don't use them because Honeywell makes them, ship them to me. Absolutely nothing wrong with the Honeywell made Honda filters. Talk about bogus internet information.

Just to clarify, not saying anything wrong with Honda OE, just wouldn't pay extra for them. But if others prefer them for the gasket, that's their choice.

if your going to get a honda oe try to get the toyo roki or the filtech they are both great filters, the honeywells are ok as well but you might as well save your money and buy the fram tough guard since it is basically the same thing. but since we starting using performax (purolator) we have had much fewer oil filter related problems. also congrats on the elements, they are hands down the most reliable (newer)hondas. i can't remember the last time i saw one in for anything but routine maintenance.

So you're using a Microgard because you don't like FRAM? FRAM (Honeywell) makes Microgard oil filters too. :)

But hey, the new 'black can' is a Better Filter and a Greater Value. Must be true, says so on the box.

In my very humble and meek opinion, the Nippon filter is by far the best filter FOR THE MONEY. I buy by the 100 filter cases for my shop. Cut one open and you will be impressed with the constuction. I took one off of a 99 Accord that had 18K miles on it. No wavy media,o-ring gasket, plastic sealed in the box and a tough outer case, metal end caps included, all for about $3 a filter. There are better filters but not in that price range by far.

I have used the Honda Filtech, Honda Fram, Purolator Classic & Pure One filters on my Hondas and have never had a leak with any of them.

if you are referring to my post then one thing to consider is we do 40 lof's a day x 6 days a week, so for us to have 4 or 5 a month leak is a rather small number, but after switching we see maybe 1 a month.

You're a dealer, you should be using OE parts.

Jiffy Lube uses Performax filters. Do your dealer charge $9.95 for oil changes or something?

it wasn't my choice to change but since we had so many failures and so much of our relationship with honda is based off of the costumer satisfaction scores from hondas surveys, the powers that be decided to try something else, the price difference (cost)between the two filters is'nt that different. we fully disclose this to the customer and if they wish to have a honda filter they get one. in this area we are cheaper then wal-mart, we charge $24.95 wal-mart is $30.00.
