That's a beauty setup. I sure love those honda engines... about as good as it gets really.

Yeah, but considering most cars would have changed their oil nearly 10 times (40 quarts not including any top-up)over the same period 7.5 quarts total usage is pretty darn good in this case.

A quart of oil every 10,000 miles? Most every car on the road would be doing excellent if that's all the oil it consumed. Why the ???

Yes, and 30k is 6-7 OCI's in BITOG years ...or so said Lorne Green ...or was that about dog food

Gary I think you were referring to the old dude on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom TV spot from the 70's...you know the one that would narrate while Jim would tranquilize lions and wrestle alligators. Lorne Green was certainly a rock star in his day though!

No ...not the Perkins guy who would narrate

"Oh look

Jim has just harassed a sun bathing anaconda and is now fighting for his life

..and like Jim, you too should think of how to protect yourself from doing stupid stuff and get some coverage from Mutual of Omaha".

Lorne did an Alpo commercial where he showed up on a horse drawn wagon with his dog that was, perhaps, 15 years old ..and Lorne said, "That's a 105 to you and me" ..playing on the notion that dog's age at a rate 7X that of humans ..but it's not a linear aging process that can be viewed that way. They mature to adults in a few years ..which would translate to about a 7X rate of development ..but age beyond that at a slower rate.

I'm about to cry after reading that blow by blow! Now I got you. Old dogs can learn new tricks they just know better than to work that hard for the meager treats.

What I left out (forgot - happens sometimes) is that "that's a 105 to you and me" started a "snappy comments in stupid situations" for people who thought the commercial itself was ..well, stupid.

Someone would say (something like) "In reaction to current market conditions that are putting pressure upon our margins, we've restructured our personnel resources to better manage this situation"

You would turn to a coworker and say....

"that's more work without a raise to you and me".

Here's one of Lorne's commercials.

I'd love to use only 1/2 a quart every 5k.

Depending on the brand and type of oil, I'm more around 24oz @ 4-5k.

My 3 cars oil usage:

'94 LS400 with 200k miles uses 1/2 quarts every 3k miles, 6 month/6k OCI with conventional oils or 12 month/12k with synthetic oils

'00 E430 with 98k miles uses no oil at all, OCI is 12 month/12k miles with synthetic only. This car never use any oil since new, even with PP 5W20 instead of normal M1 0W40. I expected it to use some for much thinner oil, but it didn't.

'04 S2000 with 27k miles uses less than 1/4 quarts in 6 month/3k OCI. This car is driven in severe conditions such as very short trips at less than 2 miles and mostly city.

Well, I'd hope a prelubing bypass system really should help... what's your engine's total oil capacity now?

I mean at face value, it's not bad consumption, but again, double the sump capacity, why not halve the mileage for comparos against stock sumps? Can a prelube system dramatically improve wear? Are dog years really non-linear?

15K has been done, and even with considerably smaller stock sumps, and still I'm sure 1.7quarts of makeup oil werent needed on average in such cases but it's a Honda and we can make all the excuses in the world for it!! We can totally overlook the effects of the expensive ancillary lube system and larger oil capacity in self-righteous indignation because that's how we roll :)

My system now holds about 7.5 quarts, or about 2 quarts more than a stock system.

There's no way of telling the benefit of just the prelube pump, but I'd be inclined to believe that it is negligible. I installed the pump because the BMK-13 setup has a spring-loaded restrictor valve which could make dry starts worse. I installed this before the AmsOiler was being marketed. I just couldn't bear spending all of that time and effort with a bypass filter knowing I'd be getting more wear at startup. Besides - at the time I installed this the car was my weekend toy, so dry starts were pretty dry.

Boy, I must be old. I actually remember Lorne Greene's commercials!

Makes perfect sense for getting the preluber. I mean clearly it's doing a marvellous job eliminating start-up wear, combined with your extra oil capacity and massive filtration. I'm also glad I could warm peoples' hearts inspiring them to reminisce over old dog food marketing campaigns. :)

No, not really. Eventually you're going to accumulate enough sub x-um particles to add up to that % of the sample.
