I have the above mentioned vehicles, ram has about 96K on it and the durango has about 60K. Regular oil changes at roughly 3-4K.

Both engines have an annoying lifter tap at startup, ram started it about 20K ago, durango started tapping recently. Tapping goes away very soon (about 30 seconds) on both vehicles.

I don't stick to any one brand of oil but the ram has had a steady diet of valvoline Max life 5w-30 for at least the last two oci's, and a mix of dino or synthetic name brand stuff since day one. Durango has had nothing but name brand conventional in it. OH, btw, if it makes any difference, purlator oil filters.

Question is; does anybody know of an oil that would soften the tic or eliminate it at start up? I am not an amsoil fan for a couple very expensive reasons and prefer to stick to stuff that I can get at AA, AZ, Wallies or similar local stores.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Brian

I had that dreaded engine tick on our 08 GMC van with the 6.0L.

I just switched to Amsoil ASL 5w30 w/ EAO filter, and the noise is completely gone. Don't know if it would help you or not.

Why would the filter be a contributing factor?

What filter would make a difference and why? The only other filters available that I have seen are the STP, Bosch, Walmart ones, AC Delco, Fram and I think Wix.

I thought that the Purlator filters were well regarded for solid construction, good filtration and a silicon anti-drainback valve. Anti drainback valve makes no difference in these Mopar 4.7L engines because the filter is nearly vertical and does not drain out.

OK, I will not use Fram oil filters since Fram already bought me one new engine on my Ram when it was nearly new (media fell apart and clogged the oil pump).
I will also, not use any amsoil product ever again due to two lost two stroke engines.

I figured some particular brand or type of oil may help quiet down these 4.7L engines.

Thanks Guys.

Fuelman - I have that 4.7 in a 00 Jeep GC. FWIW - I have found that Mobil 1 10/30 High Mileage Syn or M1 0/40 quiet lifter tick in mine. It has the lifter tick with regular M1 syn, Synpower, even PP so go figure - temperamental lifters I guess.

It's been a great motor though. 110k trouble free miles, plenty of power and torque.

Thanks Mckay, I will see if I can find that oil. Since I change my oil fairly frequently, are there any less expensive alternatives that have worked for you?

Late to the party but I am using a combination of 5 quarts GTX 5w-30 and 2 quarts of SYNTEC 5w-30. I use an oversized filter also. Amsoil SDF-15. Runs like a clock! 2k3 Durango 4.7 liter. 136,*** miles.

Is their any real benefit in using an over sized filter?

I get the M1 HM at either Walmart or Autozone. Another one that has worked well on that lifter tick is Lucas 10/30. Although the Lucas is not highly thought of on this site so not sure what to make of that.

I have an 03 durango with 58,000 and the 4.7 motor. I was using PP 5 30 and Now I'm using Q Torque 5 30. I have always used the Purolator Premium filter and I have no lifter tap. Only problem I've ever had and still got is the car sometimes idles rough upon startup. The check engine light has been on and the code says small vacum leak, but I can't find it.

Good luck!

Fuelman I have a 02 1500 pu with the ticking sound. I am astudent at an automotine colledge and am getting in to this on monday. I might have more on that then. Some info I have on this is that the valve springs in this engine are are the problem to combat this chrysler went to a high performance 4.7 that costs more thyy added some high performance stuff ect. but they went with a beehive valve spring this stoped the ticking. For those of us who dont have this highperformance 4.7l try a additive called sea foam it has quieted the ticking but not all the way. An other issue is the PVC system do you ever notice a mayo looking film on the oil cap. the PCV isnt ventlating the system properly. I am looking in to the fix on this I have an idea on how to fix it but I am looking for a more firm plan.

Some times that small evap leak is the fuel cap have you tryed to ply some vasolen on the fuel cap o-ring and on the edg of the fillerneck. some tines that works.
