    Base Stock Formulations and Percentages

I know that the base stock of most oils is usually a blend of different types or groups; e.g., a little bit of grp IV, some of grpV, more of grp III, etc. And I know that the exact formulations are proprietary, but I wonder is there any rule or practice that says in order to be advertised as...

Does Oil Pressure Help Film Strength?

Does high oil pressure help film strength? Thinking of motors like the Ford Coyote V8 that runs on 5w20 and produces oil pressure of 20 to 25 psi per 1000 rpm - - about twice what used to be the norm of 10 psi per 1k rpm.

    Beta Ratings for Oil Filters

How do you find beta ratings for oil filters? They don't seem to be printed on the filter boxes, and can't find them in any print or online catalogs or descriptions of the filter. Have to write to the manufacturer? I'm interested in comparing the beta ratings for the stock Mustang filter...

    Who Makes Motorcraft Oil Filters

Seem to be very good in this comparison, although it doesn't compare efficiency of the filter media. http://hillerford.com/resource_library/2010/motorcraftcompare.pdf

    Who Makes Motorcraft Oils

Does anyone know which lube mfr makes Motorcraft oils? The bottle of their full synthetic says it's a product of Korea (South Korea I hope) and blended in the USA.

Magnetic Drain Plugs in Auto Engine Oil Sumps

All of a sudden these things are the rage on one of the 2015 Mustang forums (someone saw them for sale on ebay). I'm familiar with these devices that were sometimes used in the past on gearboxes (I think they serve the same purpose as filters to catch the larger debris), but I've never seen...

Engine Design Features That Permit 5w20

I'm getting a 2015 Mustang GT with the port injected naturally aspirated V8 (435 hp, 400 lb ft torque). Ford spec's 5w20 synthetic for this motor. Coming from BMWs, I'm used to thicker oils (10w60 for na M cars, and 5w30/5w40 for the latest turbo motors). What design features in a high rpm...

What additives DO NOT show up in uoa's?

Are there any additives that could be in an oil that would not be revealed in a typical uoa?

    New Redline 5w30 diesel oil

I've got a 2014 BMW 328d diesel (four pot direct injection single turbo). BMW wants it to run on a 5w30 oil that is BMW LL04 approved. Normal oil temp is 210 F. with rpms in street op usually between 1500 to 2000 rpms. What would be the advantage of, or the need for, running an ester base lube...

    Dealer Prep of New Car

NE1 have an idea of what dealers generally do cosmetically when prepping a new car before delivery? I have a new BMW on order (not being bought from stock), so I have the opportunity to limit, if that's the word, the damage the dealer will do to the paint. I believe the dealer will have to...

    Castrol TWS 10w60 1200 mi break-in BMW M3

Here is a uoa (done by Polaris Labs) of the factory fill from a 2013 BMW M3. BMW requires the oil on M cars to be changed at the first 1200 mi. Thereafter the factory oci is 15k mi. The service fill for the M3 is Castrol Edge TWS 10w60, an oil made exclusively for some M cars. For comparison...

    Castrol TWS 10w60

Below is a voa of the oil BMW prescribes for all the naturally aspirated port injected M cars, Castrol Edge Professional TWS 10w60. The voa was done by Polaris. The oil is made in Europe; it is API SM ACEA A3/B3. The bottle bears a "Filling date 12.07.12". I am under the impression that TWS is...

    BMW High Performance Syn 5w30

Here is a VOA done last week by Polaris Labs on a sample of the oil used by BMW in all their current gas models with turbo direct injection motors (including the M5 and M6). BMW recommended oci is approx 15,000 mi (motors have ecm computer algorithms plus oil life monitors) with 7 qts in the...

Oxidation & Nitration in a VOA report

Recently did a VOA of a Castrol 5w30 oil spec'd by BMW for use in their diesel engines. VOA done by Polaris labs. I was surprised to see the VOA report showed 10 abs/cm for both oxidation and nitration. How is it possible for oxidation and nitration to show up in an unused motor oil?

SAE Study: Affect of Fresh Engine Oil on ZDDP

Some time ago I read (on BITOG I think) about an SAE study that showed that fresh engine oil had a tendency to take up or dissolve the antiwear layer laid down by the old oil before it formed its own antiwear layer. This SAE study would seem to support this phenomenon -...

BIMWADS in Europe Use LL04 in your BMWs?

I believe that BMWs in Europe use oil that is BMW LL04 approved, and that is what is spec'd in the owner's manual for both gas and diesel - - is that correct?

    Refining Diesel

Is it cheaper to refine ultra low sulphur diesel from crude than it is to refine gasoline? What about refining diesel vs gasoline from the infamous dilbit (diluted bitumen) that would come down the XL pipeline (if it's ever built) from the tar sands of Alberta?

Does diesel PCMO nee to be Grp IV?GrpV?

Do diesel engine oils for modern turbo direct injection diesel cars benefit from being Grp IV or Grp V base stock? They are not high reving; I don't think they run particularly high oil temps; and I don't think they run with a lot of fuel dilution - - or at least the typical fuel dilution level...

BMW 335d - diesel fuel treatment

Anyone with the 335d using a diesel fuel treatment, particularly with cetane booster? The engine is optimized for euro premium diesel, 51 cetane or above, and that fuel is very hard, if not impossible, to find in the U.S.
