Why the need for an engine overhaul . . . ?

The original headgasket was replaced at around 100,000 or so in 1999. The independent shop had no clue that there was service bulletin from Honda 97-047 calling for a special gasket and special headbolts only to be used on Civics that are prone to sipping coolant and external leaks. So at...

Syn or Dino given these driving conditions?

There does seem to be a strong bias against synthetic oil and the whole Auto-Rx issue. I've read between the lines that synthetic causes sludge and there is no reason to ever use synthetic - especially a High Mileage synthetic. You will be better served using dino oil forever. The more I read of...

Syn or Dino given these driving conditions?

My point exactly. Ok lets get more specific ........ .....What Is: your current mileage? the engine and what does the manufacturer specify in the manual? total miles driven per year? your current rate of oil consumption? & have you run synthetic before? If so what brand, type and the price...

Syn or Dino given these driving conditions?

I think we are splitting hairs here. If it was me just run the synthetic in the winter and be done with it. Sounds like the extra cost of the syn will be canceled out by the added peace of mind for quicker oil flow in cold temps. Congrats on planning to be the last owner of your car - just like...

Why the need for an engine overhaul . . . ?

I hear posters state your paint will peal off, wheels fall off, body will rust out long before the engine needs to rebuilt . . . . So if your changing you oil regularly with dino and doing UOA with synthetic on longer intervals etc. then what is the problem? I have original 254,000 miles on my...

    Mobil 1 10W-40

What does a new motor spec for your engine. Thicker is not always better. If you look at the specs http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/NAXXENPVLMOMobil_1_High_Mileage_Oil.asp the 10w-30 weight has better ratings.

Lube control or auto-rx w/ Amsoil

Several Amsoil promoters here also endorse Auto-Rx. To answer your question yes you can use synthetic in the wash phase of the Auto-Rx cycle. Personally I would not waste the extra money on a syn oil unless of course it's already sitting in there and you wish to add the initial dose to your...

    HM oil and oil leaks

This is precisely my concern with using HM oil in an engine that DOESN'T leak then switching back to a non dino oil and having leak issues.

    Mobil 1 HM ?

There is difference between run of the mill M1 vs. M1 HM. Mobil makes a tall claim on clean up of sludged up motors even compared to their own dino "HM" oil. It's very possible that Mobil 1 HM will clean just as well as Auto-Rx. I'm using Auto-Rx on 3 vehicles now. Time will tell...

Are all 5-speed Honda/Acura automatics predoomed to a failure???

I feel very fortunate. My 1993 Honda Civic 4 speed auto is on 254,000 original miles with no issues with the tranny. Still shifts where it should. Overdrive locks up when it should. Hey I thought this was normal service for Hondas. Fluid has been changed fairly regularly. Specs Dextron II but...

Rotella T 5w40 for Toyota Tacoma

I use RTS in my 22r powered 85 Toyota however I'm thinking it might be tad too thick for your application. I've run Mobil 1 15w-50 before and it made my Toyota sluggish. I'm a big fan of RTS however on a newer truck I would not us anything heavier than something such as Mobil 1 High Mileage...

    Mobil 1 HM ?

Is it a Energy conserving rated oil? Every HM 5w-30 I've seen is not.

    Mobil 1 HM ?

Are you 100% sure it's Mobil "1" High Mileage 5w-30? Their web sit only lists 10w-30 & 10w-40.

    Auto-Rx 250,000 Civic & leaking main seal ???

So based on this I will change out the headgasket and continue the rinse as if the headgasket issue never happened.

    Mobil 1 HM ?

I had wondered the same thing. After pouring over the product data "tea leaves" for this oil compared to Valvoline Maxlife 5w-30 Full synthetic I have come to the conclusion that the viscosity level is very close to M1 HM 10w-30. Considering you're in Florida extreme cold start up is not an issue.

    Auto-Rx 250,000 Civic & leaking main seal ???

ok . . . let me reiterate for the sake of clarity. Turns out oil leak is from bad headgasket NOT main seal the best I can tell. Headgasket is leaking oil thus headgasket will be replaced very soon. When you replace headgaskets you most always replace oil & filter. It's not a matter of NOT...

Recommend oil for new car (2007 Honda Civic Si)

2006 & 2007 Si Civic owners, Your mpg mixed city results are really no worse than some what Honda Fit owners are getting. Honda fit only cranks out 107 hp or so. So for another 100hp your mpg numbers are really solid. Enjoy your sweet compromise. My resistance is in the jump in insurance...
