What do you think is "hard on oil".

Yes, what is it? I keep getting messages about it in my inbox.

Well if it makes you feel better, if anything is really wrong, you still have quite a ways on the car warranty. How did you sample the oil? Maybe the wear numbers were high because you got the bottom of the pan gunk. Can you use a thicker grade oil? If you expect it to shear down a grade...

Europe Toyota Prius HYBRID 15W-40 10,000 miles

Hybrid! now there's an interesting OA. The wear look pretty good IMO. Re: moly Is it wear from toyota moly engine coating, or is it german ueber-oel? Must be the oil, surely; what are you using? You would think it would be hard on the oil, but I don't think it's as bad as above. The engine...

Kay: Some weapons may have been moved to Iraq...

It is interesting that the editorial is written in the same misleading style as Bush's pre-invasion charades about weapons of mass destruction and an imminent threat. First, Iraq was in the process of complying with UN resolutions. They demonstrated their best efforts, even partially destroying...

    Valvoline motor oil

Additive package aside, I think the base oil might be quite good in fact. The somewhat weaker additive levels may be allright or even good for those changing oil regularily at 3K mi. So, it has been an observation that Valvoline has a weaker additive package for most of their low end products...

it would be nice to have an analysis on how much the winter season UOA affects the wear levels and out of grade thinning. for example, what's the correlation between the # of months posted from the late winter (end of Feb/beg March) and wear levels? I would wager that winters are at least...

    Kay: "Iraq had no WMD"

Ggolly geeezzz what a shocker this is!!! Hmmmm, well maybe those democRat pagan treehugging dirt worshipper were right for once and we have been neo-conned. But oh, well, it's just my neighbor's kids that are risking their lives and limbs in eyeraq; I'm hoping to pay 10 cents less a gallon...

    2002 Accord V6, 4K OCI, 17K vehicle, M1-5W30

Looks like the winter weather and short trips have done a job on this oil. IMHO you could benefit from a thicker grade or some VI's midway between the oil change to compensate for oil thinning as you get fuel dilution from accumulating all these short trips. Why not throw in a cheap bottle of...

Newbie question: When to do a UOA

Good question, I'd also like to know the answer to this. I have about 1600 miles/4 months on some cheap Kendall dino oil. I want to pull a sample and send it in to check if things are ok with the engine, and also in order to get an estimate of how far I can take this oil. I'm hoping 4000mi or...

    GM 3.8L V-6 Extended Drain

I have not heard of this: What's the dreaded head gasket leak, and do longer OCI's, or the PF-52, tend to bring on this leak? At what mileage range does this problem start to spring up and at what years did GM start to fix this?

Help me simplify my life. Need to consolidate my oil needs.

No it isn't 15W isn't thick at all, it's probably fine for > -5 Celsius but you should look that up in the jetta manual. I like this idea: I'd prefer 5-30 though. And you can mix in some of that thin synthetic into the 15-40 to thin it down when you change the oil in the fall or winter.

    DIY cheap supercharger

Thanks for all the interesting input, people. I like the compressed air vessel idea, though such a project would be a major undertaking. Perhaps the compressed air vessel could serve as storage for regenerative breaking. More: Not true, the shop vac CFM figure is for zero pressure...

    DIY cheap supercharger

The other day I saw some electric "supercharger" things on ebay and they supposedly boost your intake pressure by ~1 psi, or so, they run for about $400. Being a really cheap person, I considered the following idea: take a little $30 shop vac and a $70 700 watt inverter and make a homebrew...

Those with 150,000 miles or more, check in

AVR8: Wow, my parents have one (~200K), it's a really underpower beast! Do you know of any way of turbocharging or supercharging this diesel? is it possible?

Those with 150,000 miles or more, check in

last car: 292,000 Miles 1985 Volvo 740, 2.3L four banger with iron block, alu heads, an engine that just will not die. The auto tranny just blew last fall, though, and so now it's retired. The previous owner took immaculate care of it, and the car must have seen a lot of highway miles. The...

    Torco MPZ Magnetic Friction Reducer

No pain, no gain Molakule! You can always monitor the wear on a short oil interval. Or just trust your luck, like Leo did. These VOA's are expensive, but they're a real treat to everybody on the board. Now there is a VOA for this moly additive, and VOA/UOA for #132 and molyslip. Thanks...

    Sampling via Oil Filter removal???

You're probably right. It just occured to me there will be a potential mess of oil to clean up from the drips after you remove the filter. I have a handpump but would need to find some store to get the long enough tubing to fit down that tube thingy leading to the oilpan.
