Huh . MINI does recommend 5w-30. I've used M1 5w-30 in mine and then recently switched to GC. I don't have any oil analysis done though. As for filters, I agree that you should go back to OEM. The MINI's canister filter design makes it a little harder to find a media replacement that fits right.

How fast does it run down? I'm not sure a bad alternator would cause a fast voltage drop. An ammeter would be a much better tool to see if your charging/discharging the battery. You might want to pick up a cheap multimeter and check if the voltage gauge is actually reading correctly. It should...

Unfortunately, it looks like they are phasing it out. I dropped by AZ today and they had 1 bottle left...and it was a dusty bottle of the American #@$%!. I've never seen a bottle of pre-GC before.

The one huge 'plus' is that you don't have to run a pressure cap. Some cars are notorious for needing new water pumps often and running a pressure-less system will extend that interval.
