I'm helping my old boss out with his Triumph TR4 that hasn't been driven in years and the cooling system is full of rust. I was thinkingof buying a pound of citric acid from a health food store and running that to descale and remove the rust, and then using a regular cooling system flush to degrease and clean the system out. Is there anything else I can use?

I'm interested in this topic as well. I have an old Lotus that needs a good cooling system flush. I was planning on using some Prestone super flush (or similar) but would like to know if there is anything better at getting all the buildup off the walls.

I think citric acid is the best you can do. If that's not enough, you'll need to take the engine apart and hot tank the parts to get rid of deposits.

If its truly full of rust ( and whatever else ) I would start by mechanically and hydraulically removing as much as possible from the block and cylinder head .
Then when you go do whatever else you are going to do I would make sure you isolate the heater core during your procedure .
Before I started , I would also have an A -Z OPTION plan for the radiator and water pump , cap , etc and figure on using at least some part(s) of it after all the above .
