Interesting Motor Trend article about EVs

This calculation appears to be incorrect I get a much higher mpg using your inputs: 1 US Gallon of diesel contains 40 kWh gross energy 40 kWh x 44% x 95% = 16.7 kWh net generator output Teslas model 3 use about 30 kWh per 100 miles highway (less in city driving) Therefore 16.7 / 0.3 = 57...

    Pine Tree Sap Removal ??

Small amount of gasoline on a cotton make-up remover thingy. Take care with this - flammable, explosive vapours but works great.

    Snow tires.

I have lots of experience driving in snow and ice and my favorite is Goodyear Ultra-grip Ice WRT. They are absolutely amazing without studs (studs are optional). I put 4 studded Altimax tires on my girlfriend's BMW 320i last winter and they were not very impressive. Might have been partly the...

What's there to lubricate on a Tesla ?

I looked at one and the only thing under the hood was a cap for windshield washer fluid! Quite a bit of luggage space under the hood plus the car had two rear facing seats under the back hatch for a total of 7 seats. Awesome car but the oil/lube might be a bit boring for us BITOG people. I can...

    1mzfe timing belt

Has anyone experienced a timing belt failure with this engine? What was it like? Did the engine still run? I just experienced what I think was a 1MZFE engine bearing failure and I am trying to rule out the timing belt: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3583918/1

Sad story - check your oil

Here is a photo under the valve cover a few years ago: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/2847997/Re:_Front_Valve_Cover_Off_of_2#Post2847997 Photo under valve cover We have a large hill in this area that we go up and down daily, so the engine could have been starved for...

Sad story - check your oil

Thanks for all the comments. I went and checked on the van this morning before turning it over to the junk yard. The oil was still full to the top mark after the oil change last night. No issues with oil level or the filter gasket. I started the engine but the noise was horrific. It ran but...

Sad story - check your oil

I hate to admit it but it looks like I just lost a few thousand dollars due to not checking the oil in my Toyota Sienna van. I knew that the van was overdue for an oil change and I had already purchased a jug of 5W30 QS high mileage oil and a filter. I have moved twice in the last few months so...

ditched X-ice Xi2's for Altimax Arctics

Interesting thread. I recently bought a set of Xi3's for my Civic and a brand new set of studded Altimax Arctics for my girlfriend's BMW 320i. I have over 25 years of experience driving in severe winter conditions and my current home has a steep hill leading out to the highway. Granted that...

Help with oil leak that i can't fix

I agree with everyone that suggested to take it apart and fix the gasket. Use some high temperature silicone to hold/glue the gasket into the valve cover. That said, I recently had good success with Pennzoil Engine Stop leak. But it helped slow down a leak on my 2000 Sienna van with valve cover...

'09 Toyota Prius with 465,000 miles Retired

The Prius with 465k miles was traded in on a new Prius V in jan 2012. "2 fas 4 u" has already put 220,000 miles on the Prius V since jan 2012. The original tires on the V were changed at 161k miles! Also, he only changed oil and filters up until just recently when he finally did the pcv, the...

Best oil for lawnmowers and other small engines

If money is no object then my favorite lawn mower oil is Amsoil 0w40 four stroke. It made a noticeable difference in how my Honda gvc160 runs and I am leaving it in for at least 2 years. I used to get puffs of black smoke when going from idle to full throttle with straight 30 weight or 5w30...

When did your CVT Transmission break? Or not?

The Prius CVT is a totally different design which has no belt. It has proven to be very reliable which is not surprising since it consists of a planetary gearbox that uses two electric motor/generators to control final drive to the wheels. It does not change gears at all.

Best lube to quiet down singing rear diff ??

Since you say the noise happens in warm weather then a thicker oil should help. A multi-grade synthetic such as 75w140 will work well in the summer and still be thin enough in winter. I changed the diff fluid in my BMW from stock 75w90 to 75w140 (back speced by BMW ) and it quieted down the...

    5w20 in a 5w30 specd car

Saturn SL have a reputation of using oil at fairly high mileage. For that reason people are trying high mileage oils and even 15W40 in this car. That said, 5W20 will not hurt your engine as long as you keep a close eye on the oil level and don't let it get low. Not long ago typical 5W30 oils...

Best fluid for BMW 6 speed Manual?

My advice is to stick with the stock fluid or something with the same viscosity range. After trying many fluids, I found that Royal Purple Synchromesh worked best in my BMW Z3 but that doesn't mean it will work best in your car. A thicker fluid can cause serious problems, such as the shift pin...
