Wix vs. Wix XP (and Fram Tough Guard)

I would not use the Frams or any other filter with the plastic cores on the GM 3.6l LY7s that use a drop-in cartridge. The cartridge is designed to spin, and the plastic core filters come apart in these engines. It's fine in others. The Fram steel core is a good filter and I have used it with...

    Dumbing up of Automobiles

Several factors go into this. Many dashes are modular now, assembled at the supplier's plant and shipped to the OEM for installation in the vehicle. Buttons, wires and servos replace knobs, cables, brackets and levers. It makes the job easier on both ends. In addition, the lighter weight saves...

    2006 pontiac g6 3.5 v6 with 172,000 miles

This engine is notorious for eating timing chains when the factory OCI is followed with less than optimal oils. Any startup noise?

Hole in my gas tank. Dealership wants 700 bucks

One more tip for working around gasoline - for those who still use a drop light with an incandescent bulb (you youngsters bear with us dinosaurs) make sure you have the kind that have the rubber skin - otherwise, one drop of sweat or a finger fumble and you have a shattered glass bulb and a fire.

The nightmare con't. Domino effect of bad service!

Having been in the service industry (shop monkey, tech, service writer and shop foreman), I have to say, I side with the customer here. I found it the best practice to at least give a head's up. I think they just didn't have the experience to know that a high mileage bearing doesn't take kindly...

    How does oil pressure work?

Hey, I seem to recall that aircoooled VWs used a piston and spring setup as their oil pressure relief valve, and that you could either vary the spring stiffness or shim up the spring to monkey around with the oil pressure. Am I imagining that?

dad's equinox PTU let go-$1400 to fix

Gosh, I really hate to see anyone bash a car company. I guess everyone has their preferences and their experiences. When I was young, I thought VW and Mercedes could do no wrong. Then I started working on them, and would watch my buddies fix GM vehicles with little effort and comparatively...
