But I also haven't exactly seen a rash of these failures in the Noxi.

That's because the front drive transmissions designed by Ford don't last long enough to wear out a transfer case / PTU haha.

Did Ford ever mate any in house transmissions to a PTU or were they Aisin transmissions that had AWD?

I had a Sienna with a PTO failure come through recently. It seems that the dealership had drained it when replacing the trans under warranty but never refilled the thing.

That's about the most common cause of failure on them. They typically hold less than a quart of oil, so a small leak will quickly drain them and fry the bearings.

I dunno why you hear of so many failures with GM PTU's on this chassis. It's technology that's been around a long time. My Santa Fe had the same setup, yet it was one component you rarely heard of issues with (on Hyundais).

My AWD Fusion has an Aisin F21

It's worth a phone call or letter to see if you can recoup any of that given the Goodwrench only service and just over 36Kmi. It's the 2005 thing that might nip that in the bud though.

Fernelius.. it almost sounds like a condition.

If anyone wants to know what a PTU looks like that is one off a Mazda with a AW trans, I want to say it was a CX-7 or CX-9.

That is a top view of the unit. The bottom flange is where it bolts to the gearbox. The top is where the CV shaft goes in and then to the right side. The right part is the flange that the prop-shaft bolts to that goes to the rear end.

Gosh, I really hate to see anyone bash a car company. I guess everyone has their preferences and their experiences. When I was young, I thought VW and Mercedes could do no wrong. Then I started working on them, and would watch my buddies fix GM vehicles with little effort and comparatively smaller cost. I spent some time thinking Mazda and the Japanese were the cat's meow, but eventually Toyota's issues with sludged motors convinced me they're not supermen.

I've got three GM vehicles, all of them have over 150K miles, two of them "new" to me. The one I've had since new has its issues, but it's been great and hasn't stranded me yet. Well, there was that one time the battery died, but they all do eventually, right?

I guess everybody's experience is different, but you can chalk me up as a GM fan. It seems to me that if it's not a maintenance issue, they eventually get around to doing the right thing. But, like I said, your mileage may vary.

E-mail sent to Chevrolet. Patiently waiting a response. Mentioned that Dad has only owned GM cars, all bought new, and put in 30.5 year with GM/Delphi. We'll see...

+1. And no offense to the OP but I don't undestand the anti-GM when they provided very good pay and a living to his own family. You'd think the non-union, temporary/short term, low pay/no benefits workers at say Honda have it great? They probably can't afford a family to have a kid who dislikes their employer, but at least they'd have an excuse lol. There's nothing wrong with being loyal to a company that provided good liftime employment and a retirement. Not to mention a pretty good employee discount on new vehicles. It would be kind of messed up for your dad to buy from a competitor, especially a non-union foreign one IMO. I have a dispicable relative (IMO) with a retirement from GM and disabilty from the military since 1940's who buys new cars every 2 years and now recently only buys Japanese makes because his idiot neighbor told him "Toyotas are the best". He bought an Accord awhile back and was complaning to the dealer about the hard ride lol. JMO.

^there is no disputing some of the above statement just like there is no disputing that GM makes some pretty lousy products too.

Not too many anymore.

well since it was founded in 1908, I guess slightly over 100 years to work on a product is enough time...

I think a phone call would get a better response.

Just my experience.
