2004 Trailblazer 4.2 - Newest Member of the Family

I made myself curious with my own suggestion, so I googled a bit and it seems there's a full kit out there that actually uses the 6L50 behind the 4200.

What are you working on today?

Spent the afternoon waiting for UPS to deliver the last few pieces I needed to complete my Cadillac's audio upgrade. All in all, I'm very happy with the results: Not much to look at, but that was the idea. Behind the scenes, I used Metra harnesses to create my own "T"-harness which connects...

2004 Trailblazer 4.2 - Newest Member of the Family

I debated my use of the word "underpowered", I guess it's not so much the fault of the engine as it is the horrible gear ratios in the 4L60. The 4200 likes to rev, it makes peak torque at 3500 RPM and peak HP at 6k. All 275 of each. Meanwhile, the 5.3 in the same chassis produces that same 275...

2004 Trailblazer 4.2 - Newest Member of the Family

Nothing wrong with a GMT360. Tough, tough trucks. Frame rot at the rear control arm mounts killed 90% of them up here, though. I never cared for them, personally. They don't drive very well, they're woefully under powered with the 4200, and the interior's are bad even by GM standards of the...

    First gen XC90?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the V8 is going to be the best of the XC's, as long as it's a post-'06 that has the updated engine block. The Yamaha V8 is incredibly reliable, as is the AW transmission behind it. Service can be a bit of a bear, but far from awful. I previously serviced...

John Deere Z515E, better oil to use than Turf Gard?

The Z515E doesn't have servicable hydro fluid/filters, so you don't really need to worry hydro fluid unless you plan to drop the units and dump them out. If you do, use Hygard Low Viscosity or any quality 15w40/20w50.

Green Grease or Lucas Xtra Duty?

That's great news for those that were missing it! I work at a JD dealer, so I use the TY6341 in my home grease gun since I get it for cost + 10.

Green Grease or Lucas Xtra Duty?

John Deere TY6341 is a Polyurea based grease. Would that do the trick?

Lucas Oil Products Red N Tacky Grease Discontinued

Why not use John Deere TY6341? That's all we use at work on the equipment, it's a green Polyurea based grease.

UPDATE: Electric Vehicle Conversion: Volvo S40 pump to 1984 Jeep CJ-7 stock Saginaw

That's very cool, I Googled the iBoost and it's a really neat piece of equipment!

What are you working on today?

I got the new AC Delco plugs installed in my Cadillac this afternoon, here's what the old Champions looked like as a set. Odd cylinders on the left, even on the right. The front 4 cylinders appear to be running rich compared to the back 4, but nothing crazy. Odd, forward cylinders to the left...

UPDATE: Electric Vehicle Conversion: Volvo S40 pump to 1984 Jeep CJ-7 stock Saginaw

I just meant that since you've already run everything to the steering box from the Volvo pump, why not add a Hydroboost for the brakes in-line with the steering gear, a la GM trucks. It would only require 2 additional lines (pressure return from the gear/reservoir). The Volvo P/S pump should...

UPDATE: Electric Vehicle Conversion: Volvo S40 pump to 1984 Jeep CJ-7 stock Saginaw

You mentioned power brakes being a possible future option... Since you've added the Volvo electric P/S pump, couldn't you just throw on a Hydroboost kit and call it a day?

    Post your latest parts purchase

Picked up what had to be one of the last sets of AC Delco 41-819 plugs left on earth. RA only had 3 left, and everywhere else wanted $10+ per plug IF they were in stock. These are going in my '79, and I really wanted the "best" plugs I could get my hands on although the regular AC Delco 4's...

Read my plugs? This is too lean, right?

I found some extra vacuum hose on the garage and got everything re-routed and correctly plumbed. I also verified that the EGR system is working correctly, both the valve itself and the TVS that controls it. I pulled the #2 plug again and looked further down the insulator, as was mentioned...

Gotcha. No pinging that I can detect, so I must be good!

Read my plugs? This is too lean, right?

Thank you for all the help, everyone! I cancelled the calibration kit for now; after lubing the advance weights, switching the distributor to manifold vacuum, and retuning the idle circuits and speed I must say the car has never run better. I need to grab a couple feet of vacuum line so I can...

Read my plugs? This is too lean, right?

It's the original distributor, so it's definitely set up for EGR. I appreciate all the help, I need to pick up some vacuum line, once I do I'll run one line from manifold vacuum to the distributor and another from ported to the EGR TVS.

Read my plugs? This is too lean, right?

I don't believe there's a vacuum advance block, at least not that I can see. The vacuum line comes off the port on the carb, goes into a tee, with one hose off the tee going to the vacuum advance can and the other going to the TVS on the front of the engine which then exits to the EGR valve. I...
