I have a five year old Hyundai SE Coupe, 2.0.Automatic.

It will not go into fourth(top) gear and when reached, it "freewheels" with the engine revving.

I can drive it with the overdrive button off, limiting it to third gear only.

Is the gearbox no good or, is it as I hope, the ratio sensors are faulty?

Any help appreciated

Phil

end clutch gone. very common problem on these KM-1xx or F4Axx mitsubishi transmissions. symptom is no 4th gear.

Fortunately it can be replaced easily without pulling the transmission.

for an idea of the process: http://www.plymouthlaser.com/ec.htm

while at it a pan drop and filter change to get out all the worn out clutch material that was shed
would not be a bad idea...

make sure you use the correct fluid, these transmissions are finicky!!!

Many thanks Egalante...........I'm gonna run it by a different shop today, but will be fore armed with this knowledge.

I'll let you know the outcome

Cheers

The Hyundai Coupes/Tiburons from 1996-2006 are Hyundai Made Transmissions. Unfortunalty, Hyundai Automatic transmissions are crap! My Hyundai Tiburon 2.0 has over 100,000 miles and my Manual transmission is still smooth. Thanks too Amsoil

Hey KR,

where were you in 2000 when I bought it?

I'll not buy another.........

well,, if you needed information before you bought it, you should of asked the owners at http://www.hyundaiperformance.com or http://www.rdtiburon.com

But don't get me wrong,, alot of people had Automatic transmission issues because they didn't check the fluid regularly or they never changed the fluid.

Or they did not use the correct fluid (Hyundai uses only Spec III Fluid, available from Hyundai and Mitsubishi dealers only). No aftermarket equivalent.

My Coupe is currently being investigated at a gearbox specialist...I await the results...and, more to the point, the bill !!

Thanks for all your comments........

Hey Elgalante,

seems you were closest! It was the C clip that holds the clutch pack together........

It's fixed!

Thanks for all your help
