Getting out of a lease

Honestly I have a hard time believing that a different seat would make all that much difference. Is that really the reason she wants to get rid of the car, or does she just not like the car and that is the excuse she's using?

Seats can make a huge difference. The seats in my former BMW M5 were absolutely incredible. The seats in my wife's 328i were junk. The seats in the Expedition are "OK", not bad for long drives. The current Chargers, the '06 has decent seats, the SRT has very good seats. When sitting for 15-18hrs in a seat, its quality can have a big impact on your comfort. I could have driven the BMW for 10 days straight it feels like, the seats were that good. The SRT, I got a bit of a sore spot in one part of my rear doing the 18hr drive, but they have broken in more now (the car was brand new) and have gotten decidedly more comfortable.

My lower back is relatively sensitive to seat quality, and it sounds like the OP's mom might be as well. Poor quality seats can make me rather uncomfortable, especially if I am the one driving. It is less of an issue if I am a passenger and subsequently not using my feet/legs.

Talk to a few dealers to see if they will "Break the lease". Get some numbers.

Why did your mother buy a car she doesn't like, with seats that are not comfortable?
Did she not test drive the car before she bought it?

Have your mom take a rolled up t-shirt, and put it between her back and the seat, to see if that helps.
If it does, then she can buy a back support for the car.

No woman would turn down a 99% new car...

You have never met my wife, obviously. Except maybe to flip to Carmax, she has no interest in a Corolla (We also have no room for a fifth vehicle.)

Most of her complaints were not evident on a short test-drive...including the seat. Her three biggest complaints (the seat, a painful ride on poor pavement, and lots of highway road noise) were not evident. (I also think she may have test-driven a car with different wheels & tires...hers has what I think are 50-series 17s.)

She has tried a back support...it helps, but not enough. (She is also so short that most are too high.)

Sounds like she has the S or Sport model. The LE model comes with 205-55r16 tires. The S model also has s sport tuned suspension over the base model. So there is a big difference in ride between the two models. The seat coverings are also different but not sure if that would make a difference. Surprised there's not an adjustment for lumbar built into the seat. I thought there was a lever on the side of the seat.

I always tell people to rent the vehicle they want to buy for 24 hours to get a good idea how they will like that vehicle. Most people do not do that then regret it later.

I recently a Tahoe and Suburban to test them both out for 24 hours at Enterprise. I am glad I did as I did not know how awesome they rode and handled. I rented a Explorer not long ago as that was my first choice for a newer vehicle but quickly changed my mind after the 24 hour rental.

It's not the Dealers fault she choose the wrong car. This situation happens-not sure how frequently when someone makes a bad purchase decision.

It's not incumbent on the dealer to lose money so she can get another car...but perhaps they would be willing to buy the lease which may require some additional money out of pocket.

The only thing going for her is this is one popular car...for everybody but her. They will probably sell 400,000 units this year.

There are adjustments for height and seatback angle, but no lumbar...I was pretty surprised, too.

Neither of my Toyota's (2010, 2011) have any lumbar support. I cam from a VW which had loads--wife actually complained about that car having too much lumbar. Thankfully, while I'd prefer more lumbar, it hasn't been a problem.

Jaraxle;

Believe it or not it isn't too hard to exit the lease. It might cost her some extra money but she can get out of it. How much will depend on how long she has had it and what she tries to get. The Toyota Tacoma I have posted about so many times here in the past, that I hated and had so many issues with( and like your Mom they didn't show up until after the test drive ), was a lease as well. I detested that thing so I can sympathize with your Mom 100%. Been there, done that, hated it too.

I only had it 7 months when I had enough and traded it. I took a financial hit( wasn't too bad actually )but it was worth every penny unloading that turd on wheels. I went to a GM dealer and traded it for a new Silverado. I actually bought the Silverado vs. leasing. My payment went up yes but as said worth every cent and it didn't go up as bad as I assumed it would. I was surprised at how reasonable it was.

I would suggest you have her find a vehicle she likes and is comfortable in( see if you can get her an overnight test drive so she can drive it more ), preferably one with good incentives to buy which will help her with the negative equity she has now, and then hit the dealers within the area that sell it and explain what is going on and tell them if you can get her out of this vehicle and into this one the deal is done. Let them know the 1st dealer to step up with a good deal wins which will get them competing against each other.

Best of luck with it. The bottom line is it can be done. Your Mom is not going to be forced to keep that lease. Most likely the payment is going up and she might have to throw a little cash in too so the payment is acceptable but it can be done. She can walk away from that vehicle she hates. The day I decided to get rid of the Tacoma I drove the new Silverado home. Took 4 hours to pick out the one I wanted, negotiate the deal, do the paperwork, and have the truck prepped for delivery and it was done. Tell your Mom there is plenty of hope for a good resolution.

PS - this is just my opinion but I wouldn't waste my time or hers calling Toyota Finance or Toyota itself looking for help. They really don't give a rats arse once the car is sold.

Seriously tho, most cars in the subcompact range do not offer lumbar support.
Not sure what fancy VW's and Volvo's most on here have been driving, but most cars I've owned
were not offered with lumbar adjustments (98 Escort, both e30 BMW's, Focus in sig. below etc.)

I'd recommend walking away from it. Whether it's a dealer getting her into a different car, then so be it. Eat the cost difference and get something better. The sport suspension she's running with a low profile tire/upsized wheel combination as well as a sport suspension is not working in her favor. It's going to cost far more time and $$ to make this car more comfortable than it's worth.

The Corolla replaced an (also leased) Prius that did, in fact, have lumbar. I also seem to recall that at least one Neon she had did have a lumbar adjustment!

Cheap cars are getting even cheaper. Just Toyota continuing to decontent?

can she go to the same dealer and try to go for the current prius which match her?
not sure about chair conditions/abilities
...blah, blah, former customer to the dealer to grease the sale (since they don't really sell the hybrids like cakes)

Those Corollas do have a lot of road noise. First time I rode in one, I thought something was wrong. But then found they all sound like that.

Can't say I'm surprised. Manufacturers make almost nothing on those cars. They're always going to want to "motivate" you to step up to the next rung.
