Just looking for some opinions on the upper level Fram TGs-got a couple in an oil change deal, wondering if I should trade them in at Wal-Mart & pay the $3 difference for the EGs, wanting something other/better than P1s to run M1 EP in the Scion xB, stepping up to a 10K/roughly 1 year OCI. Any suggestions?

I'm no fan of the XG but it is far superior to the TG, especially for extended drain intervals.

Something better than a P1? I'd contest the notion that a Fram EG is better. A P1 should handle a 1 year / 10K mile OCI without a problem.

Don't disagree with your 10k/1year comments about the P1. But since the OP asked, given the choice only between the XG and TG for 10k, I'd spend the extra ~$3 for the XG. Even feel confident for 10k+ leeway.

But for ~$6 at Wally for a TG, the P1 would be the choice for less money.

I've run the TGs that I've gotten on oil change specials in both the '99 Accord and the Forester without any issues.
I only ran them for 6K, however.
If I were buying a filter outright, I think I'd prefer the P1 to the TG.
If I felt flush, I might go for an M1 or a K&N.
Either could be a decent buy from Advance Auto if ordered online with a 40% off discount code.

I have been using TG filters for the last few years. I have cut open every one and there have been no issues. But I will be switching to Fram XG for my next few oil changes based on this recent extensive study:

The extended guard performed very well - third filter paper down is the XG:

The Fram extended guard is the best bang for the buck, when you take price into account. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with Royal Purple, K & N or Mobil 1. It would be nice for the auto industry to make a standard high enough so the low end filters are pulled from the market, imo.

I guess the question is how much difference does a good filter make in terms of wear? It feels good to have the best filtration possible, but... Many vehicles run with low end or basic filters and they still run high miles on the original engine.
