Your thoughts on Valvoline NEXGEN

Hello and what is everyone's thoughts on the VALVOLINE NEXGEN/ MAXLIFE NEXGEN? I see no harm in it at all, and would use it if I thought bout stopping and buying a jug, may get a jug of the MAXLIFE NEXGEN for the 98' Corolla since it does not rack up many miles. I can get it at Autozone with my work account for $14 out the door.


let me know your input and advice, and I think its a lot better than using 100% crude all the time like a lot of the big oil companies use. My company uses Safety Kleen 100% recycled "eco power" Saftey Kleen oil in our fleet and no oil related issues at all.

Valvoline wouldn't put their name on it if it wasn't good stuff. I don't know what all they use used oil in, but I have seen it being used to make asphalt, so if this trend continues the other uses for old oil will have to fill that void with another product.

It is good and it is on sale at AAP for 5 quarts and a purolator filter for 20.99 and a 20 buck rebate debit card. Hard to beat almost free high quality Valvoline oil.

I have some Nextgen Maxlife 5-20 standing by for my next change.

I personally would LOVE to use the "Eco Power" Oil, but according to the saftey-kleen site, no one within 100 mi of me sells it, and the listed shops if you add 50 more miles in to the search (150mi radius from me) all seem to be quick lube shops, that would just have it in bulk.....and can't seem to find it for sale on the interwebs anywhere...

The price is too high. They are saving $ most likely using the old oil so the price needs to jive with that fact.

Also the name "nexgen" what does that mean to most consumers...NOTHING I'D WAGER.
NEEDS AN HONEST NAME!
They need to be honest and let people know that the used oil is completely purified to meet and beat the specs of newly refined oil.

I keep thinking...WHO HIRES THESE MARKETING HACKS???

same as white bottle, which is to say not as many additives as some other dinos. most likely still a fine oil though

^Not as many metallic additives, only. The rest we really don't know what the whole additive package is.

my thoughts entirely. I would use it without any concern. I cant see Valvoline risking a product that would do great harm.

I agree, and yes, the price is too high. that's why I dont use it in my old beater, if it was more competitive, I'd def' use it.

Agreed! It's going to take a lot more than just hype to get me buying it.

I can picture it being ok for things like 2nd or 3rd cars,or plow/dump-run trucks that rarely rack up many miles.Under those requirements you would need to change the oil yearly anyway,why not use a recycled waste product instead of wasting virgin oil for lightweight useage. That said,new Walmart SuperTech oil is $12.00 a jug and probably a better deal.

Unless you're a senior engineer specializing in the economics of unit operations, you cannot say I it is more/less expensive. Distillation costs some amount to operate, so does solvent extraction, new additives, labor, etc.

So the question is if it is a more intense process to crack the crude byproducts (that come off of fuels refining), versus refurbishing the used oil. It may not be cheaper, it may just be equivalent costs, or maybe it just yields a better product for the same price.

IMO it is a step in the right direction. There is lots of speculation about stuff that people aren't qualified to claim.

I'd use it with confidence, especially if you can get a deal. I doubt it is worse, and may be slightly better than new oil.

i agree. i would think a refined used oil would be better than a refined crude oil. or maybe they're the exact same. but i don't see how it could be worse

While I'm sure it's a good product, I would speculate that it's just something that their marketing/public relations cooked up to make them (read petroleum refiners) appear more "socially responsible". I think it's directed primarily at the "eco/greenpeace/tree huggers" since those groups are constantly ragging on them. And, yes it is priced too high. Take a stroll through Valvoline's Nextgen's website and see if you don't come to the same conclusions. They openly bragg about how much less it costs to produce, smaller carbon footprint, no drilling costs, starting out with a more refined product, cuts fossil fuel use, etc,etc. (I think I'm making myself sick!) It doesn't take a degree in economics to figure out that the manufacturing costs are much less when their price per barrel cost of recycled oil they obtain from the waste oil collectors that get it from Walmart, Zippy Lube, etc, is a fraction of buying light sweet crude on the open market. So it's a win-win for them. Now they can refine more imported oil so they can export more gas and diesel while we keep paying "out the wazoo"! The hypocrisy is driving me nuts! Makes you almost want to buy an electric car. At least we would be supporting American coal miners to keep it charged. For the record, I try to be objective and I hope I'm wrong.....but I don't think I am in this instance. Just my 2 cents.

I'm running it in the Kia now, and have experienced no ill effects. Re-refining oil here in the USA keeps is from buying crude from overseas. Every little bit counts. Use with confidence.
